    Jeff Huntley, excellent post!

I hope you don't mind if I "borrow" some of your thoughts in letters to my California congress creeps.

Heh hey Mike Bell I guess those laws aren't working up there are they? And don't blame us, your country willingly imports criminal "refugees" who have links to crime organizations in Mexico and the US. You think they give a shit about your laws? What is the national origin of those criminals you speak of dipshit?

Vint Macabe or anyone who agrees with him. The reason we seem to have more incidents is because we are larger. Some numbers from another article: "Of the 86 countries where we have identified mass public shootings, the US ranks 56th per capita in its rate of attacks and 61st in mass public shooting murder rate. Norway, Finland, Switzerland and Russia all have at least 45 percent higher rates of murder from mass public shootings than the United States."

"Happily, I now live outside the USA, in a country that has PLENTY of gun-control laws -- and few, if any, incidents involving gun violence."
(Thank you for leaving! We're happy you left as well!)

"...please STOP RUINING MY COUNTRY THE WAY YOU'VE RUINED YOURS!!!!!!!"
(Uhh, I do believe it's YOUR countries citizens that ILLEGALLY smuggled guns into YOUR country and used them illegally. Maybe look in your own back yard before pissing in mine?

How do you dismiss the facts of Australia and New Zealand?

Red Flag laws have spurred quite a bit of controversy. This legislative movement seeks to create a process to remove firearms from the homes of people who are rumored to be dangerous to themselves or others. The proponents of such laws cite this as a possible way to help combat mass shootings and suicides. However, the truth is far more damning.

The 5th & 14th Amendments of the U.S. Constitution mandate that no one shall be "deprived of life, liberty or property without due process of law." Although this should be clear to anyone with a basic comprehension of English, it’s often ignored by judges and politicians. Depriving people of a constitutional right before a trial and without charges tramples on the notion of innocent until proven guilty and severely erodes the core values of justice.

Proponents of red flag laws argue due process is respected by allowing the deprived to appeal to the courts to reinstate their rights. However, this backward process would imply that the second amendment is a privilege, not a right. Furthermore, state agents finding cause for a warrant and subsequently seizing private property while denying access to a constitutional right seem to be a perfect setup for a kangaroo court system. There is a serious risk that citizens found guilty of nothing and charged with no crime will be paying expensive fees to petition the courts to restore what should be their constitutionally guaranteed rights. Such concerns aren’t just wild superstitions. Our nation’s history of the corrupt process of civil asset forfeiture gives ample reason to believe the aforementioned outcome is more likely than not.

If the open assault on our rights and criminal justice system wasn’t reason enough to reject red flag laws, one should note the paternalistic tone of the advocates. Proponents are selling these bills as a way to reduce suicides. But let’s take a step back and think about the core of this argument. We have authority figures claiming they need the means to deny you of your constitutional rights in order to protect you from yourself. This disturbingly authoritarian doublespeak implies that some of our elected officials believe that people can’t be trusted with their rights. This clear attempt to coax ordinary citizens into surrendering their rights should be rejected as the degradation of free society that it is.

Americans should also pay very close attention to states that have implemented these laws. In places like Maryland and Florida, success isn't measured in lives saved. Intuitively, it’s impossible to determine how many lives were saved or if lives were ever truly at risk; thus the only practical measure of success for such a law is the number of guns seized and people denied their rights. Americans should resist the trend of assumed guilt and demand elected officials end this assault on our constitutional rights.

I see that the two dissenting views are nothing more than "feelings" without any stating of fact(s) agreeing with their opinions, yet the rest DO STATE facts and even give links, and I find it quite funny that one even says it is OUR FAULT about shootings in HIS Country, but he doesn't mention the FACT that Canada DOES ALLOW FIREARMS to be possessed by it's citizens. I wonder why he failed to mention this??!! OR was it that he was only interested in pointing fingers rather than actually discussing FACTS?? I firmly believe it is the latter!!!! I have guns in my house, and both my children grew up knowing that "dad" would let them touch and hold those guns (and shoot them) if they asked. And funny how they grew up respecting guns for what they are, and NOT what evil people can do with them. And I also find it funny that the news media is all over the shooter in El Paso but the Dayton shooter isn't even mentioned anywhere other than there was a shooting .....could that be because the Dayton shooter was a LIBERAL??? A LIBERAL shooter?? OH MY, that doesn't fit our narrative, we'll just focus on El Paso for now!! Yeah, Right!!!!!! It's a shame in today's world that the media only focuses on what THEY BELIEVE IN OR WHAT THEY WANT out of the situation and doesn't even mention the LIBERAL side unless of course, it is to BAN GUNS!!! Seriously, NO really, SERIOUSLY THINK about the media and how they report and remember this come November, 2020!!!!!

God does not expect us to stand there and to be violently murdered, be the murderer an evil man or an evil government. It is the Right of every man to defend himself and those dear to him against predators. Those who beat their swords into plowshares will dig their own graves for those who did not. History has shown repeatedly that genocide always follows gun control. Don't think "it can't happen here." It happened in Germany-- a nation of scientists, artists, scholars and all manner of other highly-intelligent people. Tyranny takes hold when good men do nothing. That's why we who own guns and know how to use them are so animated with this issue. Mao murdered 70 million. Che Guevara murdered 70,000. Castro murdered 700,000. Pol Pot murdered 2 million. Stalin murdered 20 million. ALL of these criminals were leftists and Communists of one stripe or another. They are the same type with which the Criminal Left and the Criminal Left Media are terminally in love...

I'm not surprised that the poll is tilting toward those who strongly agree with the opinion piece writer. After all, people of this ilk tend to share their wrong-headed, paranoid and fearful views with those of like minds. Wonder how many of those reading the links to "examples of home defense" actually thought about and investigated the so-called news stories. ONE of the stories -- the one involving several young men breaking into a house and being confronted and shot by a young man -- was a case wherein the "invaders" KNEW THE MAN whose house they broke into! Another story about multiple invaders supposedly took place in Florida, but police were "still investigating" according to the story -- a story which was reported by "Brietbart News", a well-known RIGHT-wing propaganda site which has repeatedly concocted stories out of thin air when reporting on political news.
Lastly, an elderly woman scared off some burgulars.
NONE of these stories are good evidence FOR working against gun control.
NONE of them (which makes the people agreeing with this poll even more insane, unless they are involved with shady characters -- as was the young man in the first story -- who might kick in their door; if they are, they need to think about more than gun ownership).

Finally, that USA TODAY would let such a half-assed, heavily slanted, rightwing opinion piece run in their paper -- AND, that they would let the author use that false sub-headline about 90 percent of police believing more people should own guns -- is beyond the pale. USA Today has become another arm of Fox "news".

Many, MANY nations around the world have enacted gun control. And THOSE nations don't experience mass shootings and murder on a weekly basis, the way the USA does. The reason? Because the USA has TOO MANY GUNS, and not enough GUN CONTROL LAWS. Only a moronic, NRA sychophant could believe otherwise.
Happily, I now live outside the USA, in a country that has PLENTY of gun-control laws -- and few, if any, incidents involving gun violence.

I am a Canadian from Toronto. This past weekend we had 15 people shot in 12 different incidents. ALL of the guns originated in the U.S. and were smuggled in. Gee, thanks, idiots. Canada used to be a safe place but when you live next door to the biggest gun store in the world and that store is run by a bunch of murder happy morons I guess this was inevitable. Simple FACT: the harder it is to get a gun, the harder it is to commit gun crimes. That's been proven again and again and again and again all over the world. Get your heads out of the sand, grow up, scrap your "toys" and please STOP RUINING MY COUNTRY THE WAY YOU'VE RUINED YOURS!!!!!!!

More people die from medical Malpractice every year than guns
same goes for opioid abuse and general Addiction ODs.I don’t see a massive background check for DRs competency. I also don’t see big pharmaceutical “like gun makers” being sued and attacked.. it’s not a gun problem in any way

Our Founding Fathers were in tune with the Spirit of God when they were writing up our Constitution. Their inspiration came from on high and I believe in God and I know he is all knowing. He knew what kind of crap we would be in today, no doubt. Have any of you ever thought about how important it was to our Founding Fathers that we were able to protect our families and ourselves? IT'S THE 2 ND AMENDMENT, PEOPLE!! Don't let the liberal Socialist Demorats try and take your guns. Look back in history and you'll find countries like Germany didn't fair so well. As I have looked around and watched the news and I have to say, I'M NOT GOING TO GIVE UP MY GUNS, NO WAY, NO HOW!! I'm staying prepared for what's coming. Patriots, follow the Scout Law, always be prepared.

As a teacher, fsther, and avidnoutdoorsman, i carry anythime legally can.

  • Angella Smith - 5 years ago

As a mother, a nurse, and a teacher, I want the option to carry and protect my family as well as those around me. I have never seen nor heard of a criminal obeying the law. Why then do we, law abiding citizens, have to pay the price bc of a criminals actions? A political narrative shouldn’t take priority over facts.

  • Brent Willems - 5 years ago

The Center for Disease Control 2013 Gun Study confirms this. It also noted that guns are the most effective means of self defense.

FBI statistics show that there are over 2 million defensive uses of firearms ever year. That is a lot of lives saved and crimes stopped.
