The north south divide is housing, income, pupil rates in school, unemployment
,grants to local authority with subsequent demised services, differences in poverty rates, mortality rates 12year difference between Glasgow and parts of Kensington. I suppose what I am saying is a quick visit will not quite be enough for our isolated southern MPs. Are they delegates or representatives? We had a Labour Govt for 13 years ,1997 a majority of over 150.Not with standing lifting a million children out of poverty, over those years the gap between north and south widened considerably. Labour doe's not need visits it requires a policy transformation within a radical socialist govt not held back by the Lisbon, Mastrict treaty and political affiliation to the E.U.

They should join in with door knocking sessions or street stalls. The Westminster bubble has had far too many Labour PLP members for far too long.
It would open their eyes. Long shut to the realities of the Tory neglect above Watford gap.
Robert Knowles - 7 years ago
Because of the mistrust in Westminster generally, I think this is far too little, far too late. Consequently, I think this would be counterproductive.
Kay Jenkinson - 7 years ago
Not sure but if they come to Lancashire they should use the train from Preston to Accrington and other routes between Northern towns. They could also check out our bus services and time involved getting from Blackburn to Manchester. Parliament would need to be prorogued for 12 months to visit just a few towns in each Northern region!

Only the ones who are prepared to LISTEN NOT LECTURE.

Don't send Twatson anywhere we need to win this election, and with him we stand little chance
Please do not sent TW....I'm afraid he would go down like a dud xmas cracker....the man is hateful !! But yes send the southern lot ,they are after all said and done Labour members.

Yes - but with our precious MR Corbyn only - we mustn't fudge this pilgrimage to Labour heartlands eh? Tread carefully , do not crush dreams... go for a close up look at shocking conditions the Northern people have had to tolerate for three generations - if Southern MP's are genuine in their wish to listen... could be a good opportunity for JC to explain how he hates Austerity in both UK and EU... and will get a deal with that as fundamental to his EU negotiations. They must understand that Corbyn the international Socialist will take us out - as democratically voted for - with the aim to get us out without more harm to the most vulnerable in the UK and EU?
Good luck Jeremy - so many of us are inspired by you and are willing you to succeed.

Not before a GE, likely would lose votes, but definitely afterwards & they should be gagged & made to listen.

Before a referendum if there is to be one.

It's the beginning of an idea but could go wrong . I suggest a lot of information on social media about how working people and their environment has been hit by austerity. At the same time all MPs and Labour members from North and South showing solidarity with the common aim. There was a great well made video just pre referendum that showed a woman who had grown up in a now devastated industrial area who was the only one in her family to go to university and had come back to a place with closed shops, no work,no hope. I wish I could find that video and show it widely now.

Yes because the North is our strong hold. It will quash the idea of London centrist or the North South divide.

Yes because it looks as though too much southern MPs are convinced from the atmosphere in their own ClPs that most Labour voters are now just gagging for a second referendum, firmly believing it is the answer to everyone's problems - that wonderful 'confirmatory vote' will sort it all out for sure. What they have not grasped is that (1) A lot of leave marginals are now very vulnerable to losing Labour votes. (2) Calling for the wonderful 'second referendum' could just about put the tin lid on it for Labour in some of those places and (3) A good many Labour supporters, like me, voted remain but are not going to die in a ditch for that either - we are happy now to compromise on a soft Brexit, put that to the vote in a GE and get ON with sorting out the mess in this country left by the Tories.
Nicky Hamlyn - 7 years ago
Yes, they should have started this initiative straight after the Referendum. I hope it helps, but as Ruth Griffiths says above, it has to be handled sensitively if it's not to be a North/South version of white saviour syndrome!
Mark Rackstraw - 7 years ago
Only if they go by public transport.
This should also include the Welsh valleys (see above)
Jamie Coleman - 7 years ago
Of course they should go. If they're not already aware of the massive inequality between north and south it'll be a massive eye opener and if they are already aware then at least in the eyes of the northern voters Labour are paying them some attention!!

as part of a wider campaign with local candidates seems sensible in a question and answer type scenario of a public meeting

I think it is essential that senior Labour Parliamentarians engage with northern consituences. One of the main complaints from constituents in the north is the lack of interest in the south of the UK, paticularly exhibited by the Tories.
Labour is a party of all the people and all the country and should be seen in all parts of the UK so as to get the Labour message over - firsthand.

I don't want to see MPs who have lots more information to hand having to face people who voted once on something they knew very little about at the time of voting and now claim to be experts on the subject.
The dumbing down of politics has to stop. We need to make educated decisions not subjective emotional decisions. It's not about North and South it is about what is best for our country and advice that MPs have received is that leaving the EU with no deal is not a smart decision to make, even if Bert in Middlesborough wants his sovereignty back.

Would appear as an electioneering gimmick this close to a GE. Post GE, excellent idea.

Not all frontbenchers are from the South, eg Laura Pidcock, Richard Burgon. But it can't hurt.
Ruth Griffiths - 7 years ago
As a Geordie I feel this is risky. The NE had had too much of decision making from Southerners who show little knowledge and little care for the issues facing the North. If Corbyn went personally that could work but I have doubts about others.
