The Oz books are a great example. I read a couple to my daughter when she was young, but I got bored with the "One Damned Thing After Another" format, despite what I admit is a great setting.
Right now my book group is reading "Our Souls at Night" by Kent Haruf which has very little plot, but great characters (see also one of my favorite recent book finds "Mink River"). I'm riveted. It's going way too fast (it's a short book anyway).
