Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries is saying the media is partly to blame for the rise in liquor store robberies. Do you think the media is responsible?

If the media did not report these thefts and other situations in Manitoba, we wouldn't know what was going on. We could all walk around with our heads in a cloud as the world around us goes to hell in a hand basket. I wish there were more investigative journalist that would be able to really get to the bottom of things. To be aware of situations is to be prepared.

It’s absolutely silly to condemn the media in this case, or generally claim that they make up stories to chase headlines. We should be thankful that they report on issues like the MLC theft situation- I like to know my own level of risk when I enter a MLC store.

Media reporting on measures and actions employees are to take in cases of shoplifters do increase the knowledge and opportunity for thieves. Media is part of the issue but it is also an issue with underage gang members who don’t worry about getting caught as they won’t have a record.
Media won’t publish pictures of the thieves (risk of being charged for displaying because they are minors), so why would they ever report on how stores and their employees are instructed to handle shoplifting?

I agree with Marilyn only to a point. Yes, the media tells us what they think we should know. And details may not be totally accurate all the time.

Accuracy is the job of the police force and investigators.

However, it is not the media that is creating the crime of theft, and other crimes that are creating havoc.

The media doesn't report the news; they make up the news. They exaggerate & blow everything up to sensationalize. They tell you what they think you should know. Most of the time, they don't get the details right.
