Should wild campers in Scotland require a licence?

This article has mistaken the definition of wild camping.

The vast majority of people who "freedom camp" are very aware of stirred up feelings against them. Thus has resulted in most going around and clearing up OTHER people's rubbish before we leave so we can't be blamed for it.

In 9 years of freedom camping I have never seen a campervan or motorhomer dump rubbish or faeces. However I have lost count of the number of day trippers who openly leave used BBQs, paper, nappies and who defecate and urinate in bushes.

The vast majority of motorhomes and campervans have their own toilets and rubbish bins and they use them.

I wonder why there is this growing resentment against us. Most of us are over 50, are responsible, worldly wise and have money to spend in local shops and pubs. The UK tourist industry is about to repeat mistakes of the past by not welcoming new opportunities. In Europe towns and villages welcome motorhomes, offer free parking and facilities because they know we will spend our money in their towns and villages

I know we leave the EU in a few days but wouldn’t it be nice if Scotland took a lead and provided airs as they do in Europe, think of the tourist pound we spend a lot in the local shops. Pubs and restaurants

Don't assume faeces and waste around a car park in an area without toilets is always due to motorhome owners, the majority of which have some toilet facilities. I have seen other members of the public using an area as a toilet, including a parent letting their child crap by the side of my car! And restricting the number of motorhome spaces in a car park prevents day visitors from stopping there too.

This is not wild camping. Wild campers take a tent and travel to remote areas on foot or by bike, stay overnight and leave no trace. Very poor, inaccurate reporting. By all means discuss the problem of campervans but don't confuse it with wild camping

We prefer freedom camping to sitting on a caravan site staring at someone else’s white box. I have never thought Motorhomes or Caravans very bonnie to look at even though I own one, so I try not to impose my pastime on others. We never park to obscure a view or within sight of someone’s home. We leave the area better than we find it. I have pictures of my 82 year old father collecting beer cans and waste on the shores or Loch Tay. We assume it was louts with tents from the big smoke. We carry a spare toilet cassette. I’ve never seen or met a camper that has dumped the contents of a toilet on the ground. That is disgusting! The practice should be heavily fined. Although, if the local councils put in services for the campers and charged for the use....campers would use the facilities. A simple addition to a public toilet could have service point round back. I really hope that the council proactively deal with this issue and add services for the campers and charge for the services...rather than simply banning the pastime altogether. The campers do bring in money to the area.
