U.S.'s lead (CDC, NIH) epidemiologists (pre-muzzled) and ex-gov /insurance exec Sibelius (respected HHS leader in 2 prior epidemics) echo same concerns:

    1) First test sets from CDC faulty (errors) - few available. CA + patient waited 5 DAYS for test after having symptoms

    3) ~1600 scientists across agencies been let go in past few years

    4) Pandemic infrastructure and experts put in place after SARS dismantled, budgets slashed, CDC under constant budget threat

    5) Pence - whose religeous beliefs guided disastrous public health decisions in Indiana, said smoking does not cause cancer, and is a climate change denier - now in charge with first act to censor all medical experts messaging

    6) As of Friday approx. 450+/- people tested, 65 positive, 1 dead - other countries tested 80K.

    7) 5 day stock market crash not due to virus but conflicting info, crazy talk ("Democrats trying to kill people" - election strategy) and lack of trust in POTUS who claims a clear public health concern is a hoax, or it will be cured by magic).

You likely won't die but WE DON"T KNOW till we test more how prevalent it is so how can commenters (and HIMSS?) seem so sure all OK. We all HOPE so.

What would it take for HIMSS to cancel ($ losses)? Good gauge IMO is what % of clinical people vs techies back out.

US-Based COVID-19 person-to-person transmission confirmed. Resilient virus remain alive and infective for days on solid surface; transmits airborne through A/C vents; estimated 15% of infected population have not symptoms but still transmit the virus; current mortality estimate are ~2%; there is no vaccine (yet) ; there is no treatment (yet); pandemic is inevitable which will strain healthcare systems, supply chain and our economy. This is not AI hype. This is 7 billion people being exposed to a novel virus that will kill millions. Valiant containment attempts have not worked. Absolutely true that influenza is a big deal right now (16000 death in the US this season alone) but we have 'within 48 hrs' treatment and a vaccine to mollify the virus. COVID-19 - not so much (yet)

Agree with It's All Good and a prior response a few days ago. The flu will kill more people this year that coronavirus. Read a little bit, don't get your "news" from fakebook or the town crier (insert @townmoms group here) and for the love of god wash your hands and cover a cough in your sleeve. With that come to HIMSS and be a Pro!

I’m hopeful that the coronavirus epidemic will actually reduce our run-of-the-mill flu mortality (and therefore total mortality) rates as people take hand washing and face touching more seriously.

I'm almost as tired of the hype around coronavirus as I am for AI and Big Data. We're a lot more likely to get run over by a car while crossing International Drive than dying from this flu. Sheesh.
