Worst remote ever. Accidental clicks all the time. Drop this on the sofa and pick it up and all kinds of thing happens. Grrr
Too small and flat. Can’t tell up/down in a dark room.

1) Make it a little bigger. (Not a lot but more for adult sized hands.)
2) Add tactile up/down/left/right and select buttons in the area at the bottom where there is nothing on the current version,
3) Make all other buttons icons have non directional icons so there is no up/down visually.
4) Have the unit sense which way is up.
This way, people that like the remote as is can use it that way and people that HATE the touch interface can simply rotate it 180 degrees and have ACTUAL BUTTONS!
This remote is garbage. I'm surprised they are only just now looking to replace its design. Its design inspiration clearly came from a slippery bar of soap and it goal in life is to slide its way to the far reaches of your couch and shatter when hitting hard surfaces. Tts functionality is not really thought out. Skip forward or back 10 seconds requires precise holds and clicks and the pad that breaks overtime. The sensitivity of the pad is ridiculous. If i set the controller down on the couch it eventually slides to my leg and then my thigh starts fast forwarding while pulling down and up various menus. By the time i get it out of my underwear, I'm now watching some other show with Japanese subtitles. Then pair this with some sort of coded locking feature makes it nearly impossible to go back or forward 1 - 10 seconds... You end up having to move forward 30 seconds or so then going back 35ish seconds and hope you can get yourself where you need to be. I hate this thing and hope for a better design that still incorporates siri..

I want more CPU power for thumbnailing/handling hi-res photos. I don't use the remote as I have a single, Harmony 950 unifying remote to control all the components. I like the aluminum housing of the Apple remote, though.

I love it makes all other remote looks bulky and ugly
but make it 180 degrees “flipable” with sensors so it doesn’t matter how you hold it.
I often think that the touch field is on top but isn’t
Two touch fields, chAnceable buttons etc

I just want to see far field microphones for easier Siri control.

Need to replace it, I drop mine and shattered it...

It definitely needs a major redesign but needs not just about the remote though. The whole Apple TV interaction needs to be rethought.
I also think we really need a real tvOs not just an AppleTV OS. That’s what we need to start a new experience.

Apple TV navigation needs to be rethought from scratch. Maybe hysteresis and haptic feedback on the remote could be a start, but it is so hard to be accurate when selecting an icon. I either undershoot or overshoot and it's really frustrating. I can use my TV remote to go directly to any channel I like without scrolling forever. Perhaps putting numbers on every tile and I can enter a number to get to the tile I want?

Simple really, think more about usability than design.
I love apple products, have most of them Macs, iPhones, iPads, Homepods, Airpods, etc. And, usually, the aesthetics of the design are a major reason for choosing them over other products.
But my entertainment remote is a device I reach for multiple times, usually in the evening when it is dark. I need something that is ergonomic and intuitive to use.
I have a Samsung Smart TV, which includes the Apple TV app, and the remote for that is not much larger than the Apple TV remote, but is far more intuitive and easier to use.
Apple, please do what you do best, look at the best available, then copy and improve it, but don't loose usability, please!

Redesign the damn thing. It’s miserable to use.

I use a flexible silicon case I get from eBay for a few bucks that makes all the difference.
1) protection
2) harder to loose in couch cushion
3) orientation can be determined without looking at the remove
