Hand Washing Jones was a German/Hungarian man who figured it out by observing the cause of death during childbirth. The interesting thing to me is that his study showed that midwives (who washed their hands before deliveries) had few deaths but the male medical students (who didn't wash their hands even after touching cadavers) had a high percentage of deaths. It took 20 years for them to accept germs theory (which was discovered in the Middle East in the 1300s). So, my observation, they didn't consider the death of women during childbirth serious enough to study the cause in depth.
