Is propaganda a problem?

I think propaganda is a problem because it can teach people the wrong things and it is extremely biased. People are lied to and are believing this information when in reality they are not learning the true facts of what is happening.

Propaganda is a problem because people's views can be unknowingly swayed by media. I believe that political ads would be considered propaganda because they are entirely one sided and heavily biased. With a major election coming up we are seeing more and more of these ads everyday. The different candidates are trying to sway the American people to vote for them.

I agree with Fiona's statement about the picture of Uncle Sam that it is indeed propaganda.

Propaganda is a problem because people are being lied to and they do not even know it. It is important that people should know the truth behind the propaganda. Especially in the form of government too, the people that live in these countries should know whether they are truly safe or not and where their tax money is going.

    Propaganda is a problem.
Propaganda can change opinions of the society and cause unnecessary drama or arguments.

I agree Rob, it definitely conceals the public about what is really going on

  • Chris Vanderhoef - 4 years ago

Roger I agree with you Uncle sam is a major propaganda in US history as it made many young individuals join the Army.

  • Marco Prisco - 4 years ago

A recent example of propaganda is the presidential political campaigns, each side is telling voters to choose them. The reason this is propaganda is because instead of giving information they are just making claims about things they "will" do. The target audience of propaganda is young and impressionable people

https://www.google.com/search?q=Trump+biden+propaganda&rlz=1C5CHFA_enUS768US768&sxsrf=ALeKk03xdV3Afr892ku2o_xsYeSLjsUphQ:1601427855328&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiywczT14_sAhU8gnIEHa16CpwQ_AUoAnoECAsQBA&biw=1366&bih=657#imgrc=6PBqPhkxSBrS5M&imgdii=Ta30jijLQlHSuM. This shows propaganda rather than news because it is in favor for someone and one sided. It is not just explaining it is trying to motivate people to vote for Bernie. It hopes to motivate Bernie supporters or get more people to vote for Bernie.

Hey Roger, I totally agree. I used the same example because WW2 housed a myriad of propaganda posters.

  • Zachary Sabatini - 4 years ago

@Roger Nam, I agree with what you said. The Uncle Sam poster really does represent how Americans can be persuaded into joining the Army.

Propaganda is a problem because it conceals a country or region from what actually occurs. Many political officials use propaganda to stay in office and prevent a rebellion. Others may use it for a more nationalist approach in order to gain the nation's trust. During the WW2, The US used propaganda to get the people to fight for the nation. To keep fighting and supporting the country. https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Fjournals.openedition.org%2Flisa%2F4880&psig=AOvVaw3OaVwWIMY-c7fJd6hkNUkE&ust=1601513762858000&source=images&cd=vfe&ved=0CAIQjRxqFwoTCLiz4OzVj-wCFQAAAAAdAAAAABAD

Propaganda is a problem in many ways. Propaganda can be used to change the opinions of the public and can cause complacency and ignorance.

  • Roger Nam - 4 years ago

@Shane Acheson I agree with your story about the general. Your example correctly explains how propaganda is misleading and detrimental towards the honesty of society.

  • Roger Nam - 4 years ago

Propaganda has a negative influence on society because it makes us believe things without really thinking them through. For example, the Uncle Sam world war poster instigates patriotism and sense of duty before the readers can think about what war really is. This is similar to indoctrination, which is education without inspiring one to think for themselves.

Propaganda is an issue because it can be biased and/or misleading and can be used to contribute to and boost a point of view.

I disagree with Sofia's view on her example of propaganda that Fiona, Nicky, Shane, and Tyler agreed with. Although I agree with them that making a mockery of the Covid situation in America and completely putting the blame on America is wrong, there is a lot of validity to this image/statement. Although the virus originated in China, it only had 4,634 deaths, while America had over 203,000. China got a handle on its cases and took strict action pretty early on. On the other hand, our president downplayed it and said “We have it totally under control. It’s one person coming in from China, and we have it under control. It’s going to be just fine.” This shows how our government didn't take it as seriously as first and therefore safety measures weren't taken early enough. This relates to the propaganda image because the Statue of Liberty displays the downplaying of the pandemic. Also, he said “Looks like by April, you know, in theory, when it gets a little warmer, it miraculously goes away. I hope that’s true. But we’re doing great in our country. China, I spoke with President Xi, and they’re working very, very hard. And I think it’s going to all work out fine.” This proves how when we had 11 cases, he said we were doing great without worrying about the risk of spreading it more. This was detrimental to our future as we now have 7.14 million cases. There was also a dismissal of science when he claimed to hope for a virus to go away because of warm weather. This corresponds to the propaganda image because he did say that it would hopefully and miraculously go away in April. There is a misconception that patriotism is defined by thinking that the country you live in (America) is better than every other country without taking into account the facts on how it is actually doing and what it is even doing for the wellbeing of its citizens. I feel that acknowledging our country's issues and trying to learn from our mistake's shows patriotism and we should try to do this in the future.

Propaganda is bad because it can influence our opinions without us even realizing. We make make decisions that we believe are completely our own, but really are being orchestrated by people in power who are using techniques such as data mining, targeted advertising, etc.

  • Shane Acheson - 4 years ago

To Sophia: I agree that the main purpose of that image was most likely to reinforce China's own supposed superiority. The media is attempting to show China as a responsible and well-handled country meanwhile the US is struggling during the pandemic. As I have stated in my example, most of the propaganda exhibited from the mainstream media of several countries are just to depict themselves as superior to other countries and spark nationalism.

    https://www.presstv.com/Detail/2020/01/04/615324/Iranian-media-react
This article was published by the Iranian media. It constituted propaganda by blatantly attempting to portray lieutenant general Qassem Soleimani as "self-less" and a hero. Although most of the Iranian population despised Soleimani, some of the population may be susceptible to getting tricked. The people who then are told to believe he was a hero, are now outraged at the US for assassinating him. The propaganda in the Iranian media will depict the US as an enemy to Iran and spark Nationalism which will increase tension between the two countries. This is why propaganda is a problem. The target audience in this is most likely the iranian citizens and the main purpose of it is to pit them against the US.

    I agree with Aidan

  • Sean Twohig - 4 years ago

Propaganda is bad because it is used to spread false information that can be harmful to those receiving it. People may believe the propaganda which leaves them with a false sense of reality.

  • aidan cucaj - 4 years ago

propaganda gives people a false sense of hope or give people ideals that are not really true, and largely exaggerated an issue for a unholy cause.

  • Nick Grippi - 4 years ago

I completely agree with Sofia. The Chinese put themselves above everyone no matter what the facts prove. I could not have said it any better.

  • Tyler Tobin - 4 years ago

I agree with Fiona and Sofia

  • Sofia Destefano - 4 years ago

To Fiona: I agree with you Fiona. There's no factual information and its clearly directed towards America, because it's Uncle Sam, which clearly makes this a piece of propaganda. This poster is trying to scare Americans into staying home and taking precautions and it most likely will succeed because propaganda is such a power thing.

  • Fiona Treanor - 4 years ago

To Sofia: I also came across this propaganda and couldn't have said it better myself. The Chinese POV is really trying to show how 'wrong' America is meanwhile they were not doing any better. It is really funny to see how our country was being portrayed with this propaganda because we know it's not all true.

This is a poster of Uncle Sam in his famous pointing pose and it says "I want you to stay home and stop hoarding toilet paper!" This is propaganda because there is no facts here it's just a message to target people to do something with no legitimacy, it is a persuasive opinion. The targeted audience is Americans because the poster is using Uncle Sam, a representation of the US government, to try and scare Americans into following this message. Americans are more likely to listen to their respected authority like Uncle Sam. The goal of this is to keep Americans home during the pandemic and get people to rationalize toilet paper and people "should follow this" because Uncle Sam is telling them to do so.

This picture constitutes propaganda because the Chinese are mocking America and saying that the Chinese are doing better and working smarter than America during this global pandemic. The Chinese are basically saying they are better and smarter than America. The target audience is the whole world. The Chinese want to show that their country is greater than America and show off to the world that China is not immature and stupid like America.
