I don't know why the class 8 truck market doesn't do what the heavy mining trucks and railroad has done for decades use a diesel electric system. Use a smaller diesel to generate the electric to power the traction motors. I don't think that weight would be as prohibitive as a full battery electric. Plus with the diesel electric system you would be competitive with a full diesel system. A small diesel like that is used in hd pickups would probably be sufficient for generator for the traction motors. Or even a combination of the diesel and a small battery bank would be better than a full battery electric truck.

I could see running A class 8 truck with a electric diesel combination where when electric runs out and the diesel motor kicks in until you’re able to charge the electric battery side. Or the diesel motor would recharge the batteries and then when it gets to the full charge then it will go back to battery from diesel. For long-haul operation. That could be doable I would entertain that possibility.
