Intelligencer/Courier Times Athlete of the Week: March 15-21
Rob Bell, Abington, senior: The guard was the man of the hour for the Galloping Ghosts in a PIAA District One Class 6A semifinal playoff game against Central Bucks East. Bell scored Abington's last six points in regulation, then converted the game-winning layup just before the buzzer in double overtime to hand the Ghosts a 56-54 victory, sending No. 14 seed Abington to an improbable spot in the district title game against Lower Merion.
Kaylie Griffin, Gwynedd-Mercy, senior: She scored a team-high 11 points, converting 5-of-7 field goals, in a PIAA Class 4A second-round playoff game and also had 14 points in a PIAA Class 4A quarterfinal loss to Archbishop Wood.
Ella Gross, Gwynedd-Mercy, senior: Gross picked up a pair of silver medals at last weekend's PIAA Class 2A swimming championships. She placed second in the 100-yard butterfly and second in the 200 freestyle.
Zachary Kohm, La Salle High, senior: Kohm won a pair of medals, one gold and one silver, at last weekend's PIAA Class 3A swimming championships. He won the 500-yard freestyle and placed second in the 200 freestyle to help the Explorers win the team title.
Kaitlyn Orihel, Archbishop Wood, senior: She scored 26 points in the Vikings 60-38 win over Gwynedd-Mercy in a PIAA Class 4A quarterfinal last weekend. She also became the school's all-time leader in points, breaking the record of 1,417 previously held by Pam Rosanio.
Jaylen Stinson, Archbishop Wood, senior: Stinson had a big week for the Vikings. In the Philadelphia Catholic League championship game last Monday, he notched a team-high 21 points with four 3-pointers to lead Wood past Roman Catholic, 68-59 for the second PCL title in school history. Then last Saturday, Stinson collected 16 points to help Wood beat William Allen of Allentown, 70-56, in a PIAA Class 6A state quarterfinal playoff game.
