About the avocado: A few years back, when Trump began ragging Mexico about the Border Wall and immigrants, Mexico did something it had never done before. Where it had deferred on trading with Russia and China out of loyalty to the USA, well, it changed its mind and there went the avocado across the Atlantic. That cut into the supply for the USA.
And it isn't just avocado. Mexico is exporting much of its fruits and veggies overseas.
Facts.

The cartel isn't going to mess with anything that doesn't make them money. If people quite eating avos, there wouldn't be any money to be made from that crop. Therefore, it would be up to every individual to stop this harassment by refraining from buying and eating them. Simple. What good would avos do for them if the only market for avos would be as rat and cattle food?

Someone needs to tell us why it is that the avocado is the most expensive commodity (in USA) among farm produce exported to the United States. The prices range amidst the $2.00 to $4.00 level per avocado in the U.S. and more in Canada. Anybody? Anyone?

Mexicans would rather live one day like a lion, than one hundred years under drug cartels thumbs. So it is fight time.
It is hard for others to fathom this mentality of STAND YOUR GROUND, because when it gets rough they run like it was Vietnam or Iraq or Afghanistan.

Wanderer, you could almost say that "the people" you refer to are actually working for the cartels. How many cartels are there, and how many members do they have? It may be a number that would surprise you and every other Mexican in Mexico.
AMLO has said he will not "fight fire with fire," so expecting the Mexican government to take-on the cartels is laughable. War between the cartels may be the ultimate solution...the Mexican army would then squash the surviving cartel.
I ultimately see a Sam Peckinpah movie in all of this...

I agree with several who made comments: Only "the government" can corral the cartels, and it will do that only when "the people" demand action. That cartels take over regions, that they have more fire-power than officials, when they bribe to get what they want, "the people" have no standing with corrupt government officials. And as long as the US drug market, plus the new ventures the cartels are exploiting (harassing businesses for protection money, kidnapping young women for the sex trade, stealing gas and electricity from unprotected public utilities, wanton murder of anyone who crosses their paths, etc.), honest business people, incuding avocado farmers, have little chance to survive under the choices offered in the poll.

I think most reasonable people would leave to protect themselves and their families.

Perhaps the president will call in the Mexican Marines and welcome in the USA marines to conduct a joint action against the cartels.

So, 81% of respondents are going to arm themselves (if that's even possible in Mexico), and singlehandedly take on the enormous, well-armed, and violent drug cartels? That's laughable! I personally would find another career! That said, the corrupt government needs to step in and protect farmers, which it most likely will never do. It's a sad state of affairs in a once beautiful and welcoming country.

Well the Army is bought and paid for. Only the Navy has been independent . As for the National Guard...they should be there. Heart of Jalisco New Generation country. Soon they will own all the Nation. Who minds paying them taxes as long as the real Gov. stops collecting. Maybe CNJ can build roads and deal out Justice better ... It is all just so hard to comprehend.

For the president to abandon the citizens to the cartels is unconscionable. He cares more for the cartels than his citizens. It is out of control under his policies.

I am a Canadian who has travelled to Mexico in our RV every year prior to the pandemic. The continued rise of violence against anybody is making us think twice about coming to Mexico. We love Mexico and the people. It is too bad.

I would have to imagine that over 50% of the voters are liars. It’s easy to sit behind a computer screen and say that they’d arm themselves and fight the cartels but reality is something totally different.

Aggression, you say? It's more a hostile takeover of an entire industry! Avocados are huge international trade for Mexico, in the USA and in China. That the cartels are after it is a no-brainer. Any business making money is subject to drawing the interest of the cartels.
What would I do if in the Michoacan avocado business?
Man, I do not know, and that's saying something. My bent would be to stay and fight the bastards after my meal ticket, but one gun or rifle is no match for the weaponry available to the cartels. Mexico, as a country needs to fight back. It hasn't done it yet and the Mexican president is completely uninterested in even whispering at the cartel honchos.
It's a damned shame, but there it is...

The State and Municipal police in Michoacan belongs to the cartels. The Army sholud take control 100% of Michoacan State if the AMLO Government is interested in recover it, by fighting without truce like the avocado growers with there limited resources.

What a failed state Mexico has become. It’s government is missing in action at all levels.
