Interesting but nuanced question this week!

It’s actually a bifurcated question: what should they focus to be successful vs. what will they focus on. Of course, this assumes that their goal is actually to assure long term success rather than just last through the next few weeks or months.

Since I work for a nonprofit academic medical center, we have nothing to divest and nothing in the way of investors. We do seem to acquire outpatient community practices, which are usually more of a money sink than a value. When we offer new products or services is typically not that useful but is just something for the marketing folks to tout. We’ve never be profitable so it seems unlikely that we can expand our margin of profitability now. We should be focusing on hiring and managing talent, so I voted for that, even though our leadership is doing a better job of alienating existing staff and leading them to resign than expanding and fostering talent. Instead they’ve put a lot into new marketing slogans and ad campaigns, which are invariably annoying or just inane. But that wasn’t one of your choices…
