Mount Rainier's "Squaw Lake" may be renamed, as the word "squaw" was deemed offensive by the Secretary of the Interior. Thoughts?
The word "squaw", though originally used without insult, has become derogatory to Native Americans, especially women — I'm glad it will be changed.
I don't see anything offensive about the word "squaw", so why are we renaming these landmarks? A waste of time and money while trying to divide the country further.
Local tribes should be consulted about whether "squaw" is offensive and if these nearby landmarks should be renamed.
Interior Department (and first Native American to have a cabinet seat) Secretary Deb Haaland surely talked to multiple tribes about this decision. Being respectful to Native Americans shouldn't be a divisive issue.
This is not an issue I care about.
