It seemed clear to me that Michael is/was a sociopath. You would think the most disturbing thing about the finale would be how he discarded Sophie practically the moment she was no longer of use. But actually it was the phone calls to the children in the family telling them he's not going to Paris after all and hoping they'd all get together again soon. That little half smile was him contemplating how he would set up this poor pack of neurotics (neuroses primarily thanks to him and his illusionary "love" for them and Kathleen) for his own amusement and exploitation. Whether or not he purposely or accidentally killed Kathleen is a moot point. Some criminal behavior occurs behind the veneer of the most civilized of settings, never a drop of blood spilled.

As a former criminal investigator, I have to say that Peterson is as guilty as they come.
