As columnist Rich Elfers writes this week, 70 million Americans live in a "news desert" because papers are closing. How should we help local news?
Local news is important, but if it can't be financially successful on its own, then maybe it's time to close shop. That's just the way of business.
I think local news companies need to give up the idea of making a profit, and turn to becoming a not-for-profit or 501(c)3 organization to find revenue.
Local news are a businesses, but they provide a valuable public service. As such, the government need to help them be successful, from tax cuts to providing grants.
I don't see why local news is important at all. I can find everything I need on the internet on my own.
This is not an issue I care about.
