I use TracFone, paying 9 or 10 cents a minute when I need minutes. There is no contract and specials are often available. I get very good signals almost everywhere, thanks to my little Nokia 1100. It's a basic phone with no camera, PDA, or GPS. Before the Nokia I had a basic Motorola and it had terrible reception for signals.
Disadvantage: no free nights or weekends. So far it's working for me since I don't use it for long conversations. I'm often at a place where people can call me on a land line.
If I used one of the major providers, it would probably be Verizon because it's what most of my friends and family have.
