Sadly, the number one topic of conversation in our area right now is about the ridiculously high number of crimes happening with no sign of slowing down.
I appreciate that a survey is being done regarding the unprecedented level of criminal activity in our town and surrounding areas.
I don't know if it's being conducted for any specific purpose or simply an unofficial public interest report. Regardless of reason, it shows support of the public, especially the many victims in its wake.
That said, I do have a few questions and concerns regarding the collection, reporting and outcome.
Why are thefts in this survey limited to petty thefts?
With the ever increasing number of auto thefts and other big ticket items of greater value, such as RVs, boats, snowmobiles and ATVs, why are they not included in this survey?
By not including thefts of value above what is considered petty, the statistics gathered here will not show a complete account of the overall level of criminal activity.
If the intent of this poll is to provide statistics of crimes identified and reported based strictly by category, rather than an all inclusive view, I would hope that information would be clearly noted in the final report.
My concern is that the final statistics are clearly defined as the content as was collected, avoiding a conclusion that may be misleading.
