Many years ago I worked for a hospital that gave a large box of cookies to every employee. It was about as big as a shirt box and we got it every year. One year it became a budget cut. By the next Christmas we had unionized a whole swath of employees. Don't mess with the Christmas presents, especially sweets.

For the month of December, our company is holding a gift card drawing during the daily all-hands briefing, so about 20% of the staff will get between $25 and $100.

Gifts are tough, man. At another company, the award for Employee of the Quarter was a Apple watch. It was just such a specific gift. I realize I'm unappreciative - I'd rather have the fun of a low-reward lottery than receive an expensive, useless-to-me gift.

Yes, I did get a nice token gift for my work as a volunteer counselor with the Area Agency on Aging. I was surprised and didn't expect anything, but I will never turn down Christmas cookies. Maybe not the best gift for those who are diabetic or trying to count calories, but it's the thought that counts. I appreciated the thought!

$100 dollars is a hundred dollars.

We used to get a present annually. At the beginning you got to choose from a variety of presents in the roughly $100 range. The person in charge of putting together the present options did a good job. The options were thoughtful and unique, catering to a wide group of people. Then for a few years we got a gift card to one of the big box stores.

This year - nothing. On the one hand, it makes sense. We had massive layoffs several months ago so seems like they should be reigning in costs. On the other hand, morale is mega low. I don't know how much incremental increase in morale we would have with a gift card, but the lack of a gift is quite noticeable.

They give us a gift each year that I'm sure is cheap in bulk and has the hospital logo on it. I suspect they're justifying it as a advertising feel-good win-win. Quite honestly, I'd just as soon get cold pizza....
