While Imitation of Life is the least objectionable answer, I have to go for Sleeping Beauty, the troubled nearly 10 year project that nearly bankrupt Disney. Although the plot is paper thin, the lasting gothic imagery with static medieval backgrounds that are staggering in every frame. Marry this with excellent nightmare fuel that is Eleanor Audley’s voice as Maleficent (worth noting she was suffering with throat cancer during the recording of her performance), and the transportive Tchaikovsky score, the list just goes on.
Yes Imitation of life is an incredible film, but Sleeping Beauty is a singular film that has no contemporary to compare it to.

I have a feeling I may be discounting how people feel about Sleeping Beauty, but to me it can't compete with Sirk's most delicious melodrama.

Both films are remarkable in color, but Sleeping Beauty still stuns me with the animation.

Sleeping Beauty is a stone cold masterpiece, one of Disney's most artful movies.
