It’s really brutal that two great genre pieces, operating at such high levels of their respective forms during the golden ages for both genres are running into each like this in Round 1. For me Rio Bravo is the best of the Westerns in the tournament, but as amazing as the choreography is in An American in Paris and as much as I love the Gershwin music, it is not the best musical, so Cyd Charisse will have to dance back into that fog never to return

It’s got ponies, it’s got rifles, it’s got Dino
Who could ask for anything more?
Old man Stumpy, I don’t mind him
You will find him behind the door
Duke and feathers, many pleasures, plotless leisures
Who could ask for anything more?
Who could ask for anything more.

Even if American in Paris didn't have a notable amount of backlash against it, this was going to be hard for it to win.
