Oh I'm so sad! I finally caught up with Rififi this weekend and was blown away! I wonder if some of it's loss can be attributed to it's being so hard to find online.
Rififi all the way! Top 10 noir. Top 10 song. Top 10 heist. High Noon is just not high enough.
Oh, these comments are really giving me hope here. I went through a massive French crime thriller phase (kicked off by Jean-Pierre Melville’s classic Le Samourai) which led to Rififi, an absolute masterpiece of the heist film. High Noon is an interesting, indeed almost revisionist Western, but it doesn’t reach the same heights as Rififi. Here’s hoping we get to spend at least one more week pondering how the perfect heist can still go so wrong.
Rififi was such an unexpected pleasure. I hope enough people have seen it to overcome High Noon's familiar appeal. I must have seen High Noon ten times on TV growing up. It's great, but it's no Rififi.

I'm good with Rififi here. We'll still have the rip-off of High Noon's theme in Blazing Saddles and we'll still have Grace Kelly saddled with a much older man in Rear Window.

Should? Honestly, 2/3 of Rififi is just a decent heist picture, bested by all of High Noon, but that other third of Rififi is strong enough to carry the whole film over the line. Watching the old DVD, my friends and I were breathless, silent, like our exhaling would blow their cover.
I'm so annoyed that Rififi is right away stacked up against a film that could probably beat it. Hoping for the best outcome here, as much as I love High Noon, but Rififi is a top Noir for me, and an overall favorite.
