I love Ben Hur - it's a fun movie with some great performances (I'm a genuine Charleton Heston fan). But a Man Escaped is one of the best movies of the 50s. It was my introduction to Bresson, and still stunningly great.
Kind of hard to vote against a movie I grew up watching, one of those great epic films, but I have A Man Escaped rated higher. Farewell, Judah Ben-Hur. Pax vobiscum.
Rewatch both of these recently and can A Man Escaped would be a Sight & Sound choice for me. Ben Hir has an absolutely banger chariot race and 2 hours 30 minutes of other stuff.
escaping from prison is hard, but voting for A Man Escaped over the overrated Ben-Hur could be the easiest decision in this madness.
