This won't be "the winner is..." Both are winners. It'll be "...the one moving on is..."

Just caught up with Rashomon. I like The Bad and the Beautiful better. But I have faith in All About Eve and Sunset Blvd. continuing, a little less confidence in The Sweet Smell of Success. Anyway, I feel okay that cynical showbiz will be represented if I go Rashomon.

Rashomon is not my favorite Kurosawa, and The Bad and The Beautiful could be my favorite Minnelli - so many great performances in it, like everything that is good in 1950's Hollywood in one movie (minus songs)

I thought I might have liked The Bad and The Beautiful better, but my Letterboxed ranking remembers it differently.
Almost entirely agree with Dave, except I went the other way. We've run the "Which one will people still be watching 50 years later?" test and the answer is clear.

This matchup gave me the longest pause of all of them. I love movies that play with revisiting events from different perspectives and playful meta narratives. Rashomon pretty much invented that in film form and does it better than most. The Bad and Beautiful is not using the same format, but does explore its central character from different storytellers and so has a very interesting synergy with Rashomon. While I think Kurosawa's film is ultimately more influential, I think I'm going to vote for the one I'd rather watch right now, which is Minelli's. Favorite line from Bad & Beautiful: "The picture's finished, Georgia. You're business, I'm company." Straight fire.
