My son was born a few months ago and soon thereafter, he would only sleep in our arms. To help me stay awake, I watched about two movies a night for a while. The 50s shortlist had been released and about half the flicks I watched were from that decade. Owing I suppose to my delirium, I watched Ordet, which of course is not the best movie to watch shortly before or after a birth. Despite (or maybe because of?) the difficult subject matter, it has had a lasting effect on me. It is difficult to think about and discuss this movie without its refreshingly unironic ending, but long before that ending, Ordet was riveting. And that itself was surprising to me in those early baby days. I thought to stay alert, my movie diet would rely heavily on action, adventure and comedy. Ordet was a far cry from any of those genres, yet was probably the most absorbing film I saw all year.

The Killing is a great film, and I love Stanley Kubrick - 2001 & Dr. Strangelove are both on my personal top 25 of all time. But Ordet is a stone-cold masterpiece, and as Ofer Liebergall pointed out above, it has maybe the most inexplicably powerful ending of any film. If you haven't seen Ordet, I encourage you to view it before voting.

Is there a better ending to film then Ordet? it should win and have no chance. but maybe it will come back to life
The Killing was among my favorite discoveries in preparation for ‘50s Madness, but Ordet is the title I am most pleasantly surprised to see make the cut from the shortlist. I saw it a few years ago (in preparation for First Reformed) and was fascinated by how timeless it is. Dreyer somehow makes movies that feel like they were filmed before cinema was invented. I know it doesn’t stand a chance against a Kubrick title, but I’m glad it made an appearance on this bracket.
