La Strada is one of the most gently heartbreaking movies, with my favorite Nino Rita themes.
Strangers on the Train goes off the rails to a pat conclusion
Giulietta Masina's performance is next-level stuff. As with Ordet, one of the all-time great endings.
One of Hitchcock's very best movies, and the fact that there are a few movies that qualify for that doesn't lower any of them. Strangers is that good, even if four or five other movies by the same director are also that good.
I'm certain La Strada will lose this one (and it has absolutely no chance of winning the entire contest )but I hope not because it's an incredibly beautiful film and Fellini's masterpiece.
