As I said before, this tournament was a joke. The real JOTY was eliminated a few rounds ago.

Goose doesn’t have an organic community like Billy strings does. It’s all contrived. I read about it on twitter.

  • Andrew Duddy - 2 years ago

These comments are gold. Hope this page gets preserved. Also my 2 favorite moments of the year were the Fireworks during Creatures at Asbury Park. Everyone who was there knows what I mean. Unforgettable moment.

Also the Athens Slow Ready is probably my favorite goose performance of the year. I just love it.

Peter may have a point about Ryman WLi - can we get a do over?

  • Ted the Goose - 2 years ago

The real JOTY are the friends we made along the way. Congratulations to the winner, whichever jam it is!

None of this matters because Ryman White Lights is the true JOTY

Wow!!! A true Heavyweight Slugfest down to the wire! I pick HungerSalt as the more complete, complex, diverse Jam. It's pretty perfect from start to finish and I prefer some changes of pace, tone & style to the constant speed and bludgeoning dark tone of PhEcho jam. I'm also still pissed that THE WRoNG ECHO made it to the final. That said, I LOVE the rollicking grove that is minutes 4-14 of this Echo. I was there dancing my ass off with wife and best friends so it holds a place in my heart, BUT...mins 14-24 that many people adore are just TOO HEAVY, long and relentlessly dark for me. The unvaried pace of the jam becomes monotonous to me and begs for a change. SO Hungersite it is... although my Heart belongs to SYLEESTERIA!!! which I think the most flawless and exultant jam of the year! It's been a fun two months! Thanks to Ryan and The AAT Crew for making it happen! And thanks to all my fellow knucklehead Goosies who spent so much time listening, arguing and pontificating! Great Fun!

Peter really got the group telepathy going during Echo .With the expansion of his rig and doing much more than scratching the surface on his latest. He sure is finding it and sometimes the spaces are dark and sometimes triumphant.I propose this be played in a barn burner plane from The Salt Shed up to some theses farms up in WI.Free concert to raise money for local food pantries in desperate need.Preferably with a very large lake or pond nearby to put out the fire if gets too big.Opener can be Hungersite with an Echo of a Rose reprise. The maps will all be corrected by October so they would not get lost .

  • Peter Anspach - 2 years ago

I was forced against my will to say Echo of a Rose was my favorite JOTY by the Always Almost There Podcast, aka “The Formula” Hungersalt is MY JOTY. Hungersalt will set you FREE. If I go missing start w/ Meal

Are you tired of The Formula dictating things for you?

Hungersalt follows the same Formula as past JOTY winners

A vote for Philly Echo is a vote against The Formula. Fight the power!

  • HungerSalt - 2 years ago

vote for hungersite or Ryan Storm will start another podcast.

I love Philly Echo. It's just so great. Damn that Strat.

  • Peter’s Dog’s Vet, Dr. Hoffman - 2 years ago

I regretfully inform you that we’ve lost Rufus today. We did everything we could to get him back to full health, but the injuries sustained were too deep. He was a great dog, and will be missed.

  • Mastur Bates - 2 years ago

Year of Thatch and should be Bonner. Philly Echo in this case by a long shot, but def not joty. Little bit fucked

  • Donald Trump - 2 years ago

The only way Hungersite is going to lose this contest is if the vote is rigged, remember that. It’s the only it's going to lose this vote. So we have to be careful.

Hungersite voters need to guard the vote because we have all the votes we need. We need to go into Philadelphia to watch those votes when they come in. Those Echo fans are trying to rig the election. It's been a hit job ever since Goose posted the video the next day.

  • Trey Anastasio - 2 years ago

None of your jams are remotely as good as mine and I am an old fart. Shapiro convinced me to do those awful gigs with you guys where my band totally showed you guys up every night. My dog's farts sound better than Rick's guitar tone.

  • mugkeyftlt - 2 years ago

My rankings for jams this year are as follows:
    1) Ryman Madhuvan
    2) Detroit REBAbird
    3) Ryman Rockdale
    4) Thatch Bonner
    5) Creatures Asbury Park

So my favorite jams were either cut long ago or sadly didn't even make the bracket.

I honestly think both Hunger Salt (lol I forgot this song wasn't actually called Hunger Salt) and Philly Echo are a tad overrated. They are both good, they are both solid. I was at one of them.

Honestly my vote could go either way but I suppose I am voting for HungerSalt. I kinda like white boy reggae and I just like the end of the jam so much.

  • Ghost of Bonner Thatch - 2 years ago

Popularity contest for sure. That noodle ass Echo is not JOTY. Of the two left it’s Hungersalt hands down. Real ones know it’s Bonner Thatch. It was JOTY when I heard it live in the car and it’s JOTY now

  • Philly Echo Haters Club, Vice President-Elect - 2 years ago

Philly Echo – I wrote down these comments on my 2rd or 3th relisten while I was waiting for my son to leave swim practice: The first 13/14mins are fine (good, even), not very noteworthy. 14 starts the transition to darker themes. By 16:50 I'm hoping that this won't last very long. Those weird Peter keys thrown in shortly thereafter tell me my hopes are misplaced. By about 18m I'm wondering when it’ll be over. Please merciful God end this. 19:30 I’m still stuck in this hellscape. 21:20 Trevor's banging on his bass isn’t helping my enjoyment. By 22 I turn down the volume hoping this will help my ears. 22:30… it didn’t. 23:15 maybe they’re going to wrap this up soon. Just before the~24m mark I get a phone call from my son which makes the music stop in my car, but the call ends too quickly and the music starts back up. I wonder to myself: "Why couldn’t this have been a 13min song?" At 24:18 it's finally heading towards a conclusion. [Compliment alert] The last 4+ minutes of the track are wonderful. There, I said it. But to call this the "jam of the year" please spare me....

On another note, "Evil Goose" seems to always be over-represented in these JOTY brackets. It's always about what is most off-the-run, most "unusual" instead of what's actually best, most well-executed, brings the most joy.

It doesn't matter anyway: the 80+people that submitted rankings already picked Hungersite as #1 overall. This isn't even the best Echo of the year!!

  • Andrew Duddy - 2 years ago

It's been a very fun final 16. So cool to have Peter weigh in and let everyone know he thinks the Philly Echo is the JOTY. But in all honesty there are no losers here. Hungersalt is a really great jam. One that we have many similar jams to? Perhaps but still really lovely.

I voted Philly Echo of course, but the question is why.
    Was it because:
    - It was a home town show?
    - at my favorite venue?
    - with my favorite people my dad and wife?
    - on a lovely Friday night in March and I got the signed poster?
    - on my 41st birthday?
    - we were in an awesome balcony booth right over the stage?
    - it has one of the greatest show T shirts ever made?

No! Those are all factors to be sure but this jam simply has it all, and more. It is all action all the way through and even though the first 15 mins are a warmup for the real fireworks, it is never burning or slow. The jam has a very clear arc and story. From about 15-17mins onward it is as focused, moody, dark as goose gets. Yes it is dark, but also it finishes back in the echo theme with some gorgeous peaking action. The real meat of the jam from 20 mins to 25 or so is just a uniquely heavy, rocking section that goose should be very proud of.

Yes there are great Hungersalt highlights but they can be replicated pretty easily in other songs. Also it's very phishy if you ask me.

Let the king get his crown today. He already has the shirt but he needs the crown to go with it.

I think both these tracks get a huge fan voting boost because the band released them. The Philly Echo was on YouTube the day after the show and of course the Salt Shed Album.

I re listened to both and I'm still surprised that Philly Echo is in the finals. It's good - was in my top 20 but compared to Hungersalt it was an easy choice for me. Peter's jams in the Chicago track are among his best ever.

In honor of the final, I want to be transparent with my top 4 JOTYs. 1. Ryman Wysteria - absolute perfection from the band on every level, potentially my favorite jam ever. 2. Philly Echo - the dark evil Goose is what gets me in the door a lot of the time, extreme levels of that here with an all timer peak. Definitely deserving to win this JOTY bracket in my eyes (except for Ryman Wysteria) 3. Bonner Thatch - knew at the time streaming it this one was special, really could be in my mix to win other than the fact it benefited from being a Thatch (everyone’s favorite new jam vehicle) and uncredited Frankenstein teases from Rick and Trevor (definite tease). 4. Hungersalt - another deserving contender, this monster Hungersite builds up to an epic final segment, some pure bliss jamming in there and spottings of Machine Gun Rick. As always, the formula dictated, that said this Echo is filthy enough to deserve the crown. See y’all in Charlotte hopefully

  • The Principal - 2 years ago

I said all the way back on March 24th... "This might be the most amazing thing I've ever heard Goose play". Seeing Peter playing the guitar with his foot, while working the keys down one of the darkest, eeriest paths ever... I knew this would definitely be talked about in these JOTY conversations... and here we are. I have this as my number one seed. Glad to see it here, slugging it out for the crown. Go Philly Echo!

  • Mark G. - 2 years ago

    Beautifully Said Sim

  • Jude - 2 years ago

Show bias here because i was at the met but i was a top % listener last year and even tho Rick destroys hungersite, i think because of how complete this echo was as a band ots the winner. This really highlights all the things they do so well together. Best echo of all time and jam of the year!

  • MrAction - 2 years ago

I just listened to both and I have no attendance bias for either. I love me some dark Goose, but this Echo (along with the RR EMG) is not JOTY worthy. It's a legit top 5 (and so was EMG IMO), but this Hungersite is special and worthy of JOTY status.

BTW, there seems to be bias toward longer song times...I think there were only eight sub-19-minute jams in the entire bracket and there was only one sub-22 in the sweet 16.....might be time to rethink how this is done next year. Shorter songs can be epic in their own way.

  • SirSpanksAlot - 2 years ago

Since i cant vote seattle echo ill vote philly echo even tho i was there and the rockdale was more fun

  • Dave Fleisch - 2 years ago

    Sim. Best. Post. Ever.

  • Dave Fleisch - 2 years ago

I was at both shows. In real time, I liked Hungersalt better. And it’s still outstanding. On relisten, Philly Echo is the one I’ve gone back to over and over, so it’s getting my vote. But this is like picking between my kids.

  • Sim Turner - 2 years ago

I grew up terrified of bands like The GD and Phish (conservative religion does weird things to people). Listening to jam bands meant you’d eventually do drugs and die worshiping the devil or something, and then end up DANCING! The horror!

Fast forward a lot of years and a lot of life and I met and married my wife, who introduced me to a bunch of excellent music (LCD Soundsystem, STS9, Lotus, Phish, etc). Turns out hell didn’t open up and swallow me, but I DID start dancing in public. *gasp*

In late 2022/early 2023, a friend tells me I should check out Goose. I start listening in sporadic bursts, and finding myself doing so more and more. I follow them on twitter. I’m still just a distant fan who isn’t keeping track of if/where/when Goose is touring, or anything like that; I’m still just trying to figure out the name of the dude who’s drumming but isn’t the drummer, or understand which song is Drive and which is Thatch.

They tweet about how much fun they had playing Echo last night. I’m like “man, if a band is gonna call out a specific song like that 10 hours later, I should check it out,” so I open the link and start the YT vid. I’m checking out the vid while drinking coffee and cleaning the kitchen etc.

The jam starts and I take notice because it shifts its tone around 7 or 8 mins into the song. My attention is shifted, but I’m still knee deep in dishes from the night before. That changes again though as the jam just keeps evolving, holding to its original theme, but darkening and asserting its presence even more.

At 13.30 I stop what I’m doing because I can feel my brain telling me I need to focus on this. Rick is bobbing up and down and Goedde’s white lights behind him are STARK. The tone has gone decidedly dark. I sit down at the counter, dishes forgotten, and remember telling myself I need to give this my full attention.

I watched in awe as every member of the band put their own unique thumbprint on what was developing. Trevor’s driving bass lines, Ben and Jeff flawlessly intertwining their percussive pops, Rick being Rick, and then Peter started that spooky-ass siren around 17ish mins in.

The last 10 minutes or so I really don’t think I even moved. I just stared at my phone. I watched the way the crowd began to just go fucking crazy. For the first time I found myself feeling insane FOMO because I hadn’t been there to be part of that churning, writhing, utterly enraptured room.

I usually gravitate to blissful jams, which reinforces to me how utterly special and significant this performance was. The dark, emotive, all-encompassing glory of this jam remains impossible to ignore, 50 listens later. The fact they pull out of it at the end with a return that feels both redemptive and restorative only reinforces how complete it was from beginning to end.

I was hooked. Like, really hooked. I started listening to Goose every damn day. My 4 year old started to listen along and sing lyrics she recognized. She quickly earned the nickname Litte Yeti cause she loves Yeti so damn much.

I found and joined Wysteria Lane and found an incredible, ORGANIC community. I saw Goose 6 times in 7 weeks on 2 continents. I spent 3 nights in NYC seeing Orebolo with a dear friend from WL. I’m seeing them 6 more times in June. My walls are covered with their posters, and my Phish loving wife is humming their songs without realizing it. I’ve met amazing friends and introduced the band to a dozen new listeners. I subscribed to Nugs and couch toured every single show I wasn’t actually at. My friends (including the one who first told me about them) think I’ve gone nuts and joined a cult. I can’t get enough.

Goose is exceptional. This community is exceptional. Hungersalt is exceptional. Philly Echo is BEYOND exceptional. It is the jam that hooked me, and while it has peers that deserve our love and respect, it deserves to be recognized as the one and only 2023 JotY.

Thanks for listening to my Ted(tapes) Talk. Vot

The moment I saw it posted on YouTube the day after, I thought this must be what it's like to go through a wormhole and blast out whatever is on the other side. All I could think was I wish I had been there. Shared the link with so many people. I wouldn't even say I'm a "Dark Goose" fan, but you can't deny it was just so unique and so good. Hail Philly Echo!

  • Cptn_Incredible - 2 years ago

I am choosing the more interesting and more groundbreaking jam today over the jam that, while powerful and well-executed, basically just copies the formula that won the whole thing the past couple of years (but with a boring plodding jam-reggae section dumped unceremoniously into the middle of it)

    Voting Philly Echo!

footnote: neither of these were even in my personal Elite 8
