i wouldn't be so sure North by Northwest is going to win this. I am a huge proponent of it — I think it's vastly underrated as a piece of pure Hollywood entertainment: Cary Grant was never better, Eva Marie Saint is seductive and complex, and James Mason is pitch-perfect in his evil sophistication.
BUT — Robert Mitchum is one of the best bad guys in movie history, and The Night of the Hunter gets into your head and doesn't let go. Unless fewer than half the voters have seen it, I don't think it can lose. I would love to see it make a deep run in this bracket.

I wouldn't mind if Night of the Hunter won the whole tournament, let alone this match up.

Ok so this one is probably the toss-up of the round. Tough one! I'm going Night of the Hunter. Deeper statement of cinema. Gorgeous black and white cine.
North by Northwest is Top Ten Hitch. Night of the Hunter is Top Ten Films, and would be Laughton's best picture even if he'd made 26 more.

Night of the Hunter was a recent discovery for me. A very chilling experience with an incredibly creepy Mitchum and a very bold story where children are in peril. I know in my heart that is the best film in terms of what it accomplishes and it will win, but I really like NBNW despite the criticism from Josh and Adam. It is the more re-watchable of the two and the more entertaining. I know Hitchcock has got other two much stronger candidates in this tournament, and this could be the demise of NBNW, but I could not vote against it. Fingers crossed I am not alone in feeling this way

To destroy The Night of the Hunter is to destroy the only evidence that Charles Laughton was capable of directing — it’s a debut feature of unparalleled beauty and style, and by some degree of tragedy, Laughton’s only directional work. Let’s not add insult to injury here. Send those crop-dusters back where they came from and crystallize Robert Mitchum’s Love/Hate knuckles forever.
PS looking forward to Josh getting those tatted for this year’s losing punishment

I have a feeling North by Northwest is going to win this one, but I'm siding with The Night of the Hunter on this one. It's not uncommon for me to randomly recall scenes from this movie that give me chills. Scenes like when preacher Powell prays "not that you mind the killings, Lord", or the image of the mother at the bottom of the lake, or when the preacher lunges at the children in the basement. Any movie that still freaks me out years after my most recent watch deserves my vote.
