I have to concur that it feels way too early in the bracket for this particular showdown. I almost abstained from voting out of protest. Vertigo by half a whisker.

To think that two films that consistently rank in the top ten of all time on the Sight and Sound poll, are matched up against each other in the sweet sixteen of a decade seems slightly flawed. Pitting two of the all-time masters in a battle royale is always hard to choose. Although I appreciate its brilliance, Vertigo is not my favorite Hitchcock, where I feel Tokyo Story is peak Ozu.

Watched Tokyo Story for this bracket, at first glance it feels easy to toss Tokyo story aside in favor of Vertigo which probably “does more” from a technical standpoint. But, as I let Tokyo Story sit with me, I feel moved by the story in a profound way, which to me really speaks to how effective Ozu is as a director. His movie has made me confront the way I may take for granted the loved ones in my life, and how I could be better to them, movies often effect me, but rarely do they change me, and for that I can’t not vote for Tokyo Story on this one.

Tokyo Story is great, don't get me wrong. But Vertigo is lightning in a bottle.

Caught up with Tokyo Story specifically for the tournament, so that's fresh in my mind and I'm running on remembered vibes with Vertigo. Ozu's film is a masterfully understated exploration of the un and understated in personal relationships that still keeps an eye on societal conditions, so it's almost unfair to pit it against such a magnificently twisted examination of human flaws and their ugly consequences in Vertigo. I had to side with Hitchcock's more lurid work on this one, but I don't feel good about it!

Way way way too early for this one. Should’ve been a potential championship match, final four at the earliest. The whole GOAT thing is way overused, but is often legitimately used to describe either or both of these. C’mon.

Voting for Ozu on this one. Vertigo and Tokyo Story are two of the greatest films ever made, no wrong choice here, but I love Ozu's films and his casts especially in Tokyo Story.

Tokyo Story comes in at 10, Vertigo comes in at 13 on my best of 50’s list. So practically tied. But I feel good voting for Tokyo Story. It will lose, but I just hope it gets a good percentage of the vote. Like 40 percent.
