I’m calling it now — Night of the Hunter vs. Rear Window in the finals.

Probably the two most visually striking movies left in the tournament, and they're up against each other. What a shame this madness is.

I went Seven Samurai, but talk about ambivalence.

I watched Seven Samurai (my only blind spot among the Elite 8) so that I could cast my vote for Night of the Hunter (a top 20ish all-time film for me) in good conscience. And Seven Samurai was great!...but it's not Night of the Hunter.

Both great, but Seven Samurai is an obvious masterpiece.

Night of the Hunter was another big blind spot that this tournament helped me fill in and it more than richly lives up to its reputation as fascinating, moody, sweaty thriller with an all time performance from Robert Mitchum. But he sure is going up against Toshiro Mifune on that front and in the vein of fine margins, I think Seven Samurai sticks the landing just a bit better than Night of the Hunter which has to rely a little bit too much on the kids in the end.

Well, since I've never really understood the appeal of Night of the Hunter and think it's very over-rated, and since Seven Samurai is an all-out masterpiece, this one is easy. I've seen Seven Samurai in a movie theater twice now and it's a transporting experience, paced so well that its nearly three and a half hour running time just flies by.

I just rewatched Seven Samurai this weekend and was reminded of how great it really is.

I don't need to rewatch Night of the Hunter to know that it's a deceptively better film and a greater achievement; not by much, but by enough.

This round is too easy. Rear Window, Sunset Blvd, Singing in the Rain, Night of the Hunter. I don’t know if they will all win, but it was easy for me to vote.

I think I have a little Josh in my personality. Seven Samurai kind of went down on my last rewatch. Night of the Hunter got better on last rewatch. I do prefer Throne of Blood, Roshomon, and Ikiru. Kurosawa is on my Rushmore of directors, but still like Night of the Hunter better. A masterpiece of mood and tone. Robert Mitchum kills. Watch out for Out of the Past if you do best of 40’s next.

    Charles Laughton hive... Let's go!

I picked NxNW to make it to the final four, but am beyond delighted to see Night of the Hunter get this far and may keep voting for it all the way to the end. Not many movies randomly recall images to my mind like this one does. The dead wife's hair floating in the water, the monster lunging at the children on the stairs with his claws out, the predator on horseback in silhouette against the dawn, the woman standing guard with Harry in the background while they sing harmony with each other. Such a shame this wasn't appreciated in its time.
