i think legislation should be passed to ban schools from using indians as mascots. though schools may argue they have a constitutional right to have such mascots under the guise of "free speech," i disagree. in my opinion, the use of an indian, or any other cultural or ethnic group, as a mascot constitutes "fighting words" which are not subject to free speech protections.

I also do not support the legislation. Like the author states, I feel that education will make a more meaningful difference. Additionally, I think that we will be opening a flood gate for the PC crowed to try and pass legislation on every little thing that could possibly be found offensive by anyone, wasting time and tax dollars. This type of legislation is already running amok in our government, and we do not need to add to it. Someone is always going to feel offended. We do not have the capability to legislate all offensive material out of existence.

I never understood the outrage w/using American Indians as mascots. You generally pick a certain animal or person as a mascot because you admire and want to have the qualities of that mascot (although I don't know why someone would want to be, for example, a Benson Bunny), so I don't think it's being disrespectful to choose a "indians" or a certain tribe for a mascot. If anything, I think it's complimentary in most cases.

That's the only way that they would get schools to change.

I agree with Caleb Chvala in that I really don't like the idea of the government passing legislation to ban such a thing. I don't find those mascots all that offensive personally, because I don't have any background in the area. However, I can see how they could and would be offensive to those who come from an Indian background. Hence, I think the schools should stop, but the government should definitely not get involved.

MWF 10am, I agree that indian mascots are offensive. I am croatian, and irish, im not offended when I see the fighting irish or leprechauns. That being said, Indians mascots seems to be overly dramatized and offensive.

For the most part, we have the right to say, do, think what we want in this country, and for the most part that is good. I don't think ANYONE wins when we confuse legality with morality.

MWF 9:00---I believe that Indian mascots are offensive, but I think passing legislation to get rid of Indian mascots would just cause more anger and frustration to those parties who are fully against it. I don't believe legislation is the right away to solve this issue!

MWF 10 AM I think that legislation would set a bad precedent for government control of freedom of speech issues. That being said, I think it is very sad that legislation has to be considered in deterring Indian mascots. I am not Indian, but I have always found Indian mascots to be offensive. The fact that schools are close-minded to solutions based on tradition and how things were in the past is upsetting.
