Loved this draft!! I sometimes skip them but this was fascinating, and Toni did a great job. (Although I voted for Adam ????)
Sorry Toni but I can’t vote for a list, as good as it may be, that includes a pretty bad remake of a beloved French movie…
A VERY hard decision between Sam and Adam, but ultimately the bottom of Sam’s list just ended up being stronger. Always love the drafts!
Just want Sam to know I'm right there with him on Promising Young Woman... though the haters and my disappointment in (... the second movie whose name I can't remember... oh!) Saltburn have scared me off from 2nd viewing.
Kinda jealous of Toni's life where she's just chilling and rewatching movies all the time. What's that profession again? Do I need to go back to school?
Promising Young Woman is my only blindspot on here, so it kept me from being able to give Sam’s list the edge. (Adam’s ended up getting my vote!)
Even though Toni’s draft wasn’t really in the running for me (love Barbie, but in the battle of the Gerwig’s it takes third), she did a terrific job on the show. These listener-included drafts are a risk, but they’re yet another way Filmspotting continues to be the podcast most effective at incorporating listeners into the show. Keep it up!
I was impressed by all four drafts and I think the results generally reflect it - when draft #4 is as high relative as it is currently, this was not a deeply flawed Filmspotting draft.
Sam hit a solo HR out of park with the first pick (Little Women), loaded up the bases with the next one (Past Lives), then hit a grand slam with the third (Nomadland), the rare Oscar Best Picture winner that is actually underrated. The last two rounds didn't matter, fans were already heading for the exits in this Sam VH romp.
Sometimes I get Filmspotting draft fatigue, but this one was right up there with the horror draft as one of my favorites. I was worried because I hadn't seen everything on the list, but everyone picked just one of my blindspots. I had a really hard time picking a winner between Sam and Toni. Power of the Dog and Winters Bone are very strong picks, but Sam's pick of Promising Young Woman to add to an already excellent lineup (yay Past Lives!) sealed it.
Toni, if you start a podcast, I'll be a subscriber. You were great!
If it was just about Oscar wins then I definitely had the stronger picks, but I can't be surprised or disappointed in the direction the voting is going. I've always thought my movie taste didn't really line up with the majority of the filmspotting family.
I'm surprised more people didn't choose Toni. She's got two "Best Director" WINNERS...plus one "Best Picture" winner and one certifiable "highest-grossing movie of the year".
