Pompo, the cinephile form the 2021 animé
Pompo: the Cinéphile.
Could be the filmspotting mascot, though she does appreciate the populism of film.

Gotta give an honourable mention to Mebh Óg MacTíre from Wolfwalkers. She has the best hair of all of the eligible heroines, and the personality to match it.
Because I'm a parent who has watched most of these films dozens of times, my answer is I hate all of them. But it's not their fault; animated family film protagonists weren't built to endure this many rewatches. They're the ones burdened with all those annoying flaws in order to grow, drive conflict, and advance plot.
11 watches in, Encanto's Luisa is still unblemished in my book. Mirabel---well, let's just say I've become increasingly sympathetic to why her abuela is so mean to her.

An incredibly flawed list. Including Moana is a good step in the right direction, but my vote goes to Chihiro from Spirited Away. The quintessential coming of age story, Chihiro starts her story as a petualant cowardly child, and over the course of a few days adopts a quiet bravery that not only allows her to help those close and important to her, but see the truth of the world around her.
A deeply flawed poll, if it omits Merida from Pixar's "Brave." Smart, fearless, rebellious — and, when the chips are down, fiercely protective of her mother when Mom is turned into a bear.

Mei from Turning Red getting absolutely killed by Moana and Joy is a true injustice. Turning Red, in my mind, is one of Pixar's most distinctive films, period, and one of their best films in the last decade.
Granted, I'm lower on Inside Out than most — even accounting for people's love for that film in particular, though, I just think Mei is by far the most interesting, relatable, funny, and well-developed character of the bunch here. (That I've seen — somehow I knew not seeing The Mitchells vs. The Machines would someday bite me in the ass.)
More than that, I'll admit I'm just simply perplexed that Moana is winning by such a huge margin here. I don't think Disney proper has made a truly great animated film in years, Moana included. I'm just simply too spoiled by animation outside of the Mouse House, it seems.

I was going to go with Merida from Brave, but then I remembered it was 12 years ago.

I'm going give a shout out first to the quite fun and imaginative Nimona. Second, I also remember really enjoying The Breadwinner, which tells the story of the young Afghan girl, Parvana, who must support her family when her father is imprisoned by the Taliban. I'm not sure how either of these would fare against the existing options, since 4/5 are blindspots for me!

Guys, let's not forget Mei is going through puberty. I am sure boy puberty is harrowing enough. But having gone through puberty as a girl, let me just say, this gives her automatic hero points. And for her to start her period while facing her relationship with an overbearing (over"bear"ing haha) mother, and do it with grace, courage, and honesty, all while spontaneously turning into a giant panda -- Mei gets it, hands down, for me!

You know what, despite being voiced by Jenny Slate, Marcel is a boy. Clearly not eligible!

I enjoy many of these heroines, particularly Amy Poehler's irrepressible Joy and the lively and relatable Mirabel. Still, for the best heroines I think we need to consider more than just studio fare.
Does Marcel the Shell qualify? If not, I'm taking Robyn and Mebh from the terrific Wolfwalkers .

It’s tempting to vote for Joy because Inside Out is easily the best movie… but Joy can be annoying, bossy and reckless.
If we’re looking at heroine, I’m going with Mirabel from Encanto. Stephanie Beatriz’s sweet and warm vocal performance embodies a character whose superpower is kindness and keeping the family together.

Can't really go wrong with any of those options! This might be the first Filmspotting poll that I try to get my nieces and/or nephew to vote in.
