As much as I would love a Tarkovsky marathon (I’m nearly a completist, and it would be so gratifying to have an excuse to both get there AND revisit Stalker now that I’m old enough to appreciate it), I had to vote for overlooked auteurs. While I’ve made an effort to be a bit more well rounded when it comes to new releases, my intake of older films is pretty much an ocean of straight white men. There’s no balancing those scales, but I’ll take any excuse I can get to tip them slightly in a better direction.

For your consideration: two more women filmmakers I've enjoyed and have long wanted to dive deeper on: Lena Wertmuller and Mai Zetterling

Last month, I saw the silentsynced.com* screening of Nosferatu, synced with Radiohead's Kid A and Amnesiac. That viewing got me thinking about the history of Dracula in cinema, and I actually thought, It would be great if Filmspotting did a marathon like that. Giving a focus to Frankenstein sounds just as good!
Even though the Frankenstein idea sounds great, it wasn't my pick.
And neither was Tarkovsky. I absolutely need some help processing every one of Tarkovsky's films, but after Lumet and Wyler (two marathons I loved!), perhaps a break from a single filmmaker is in order. (I also think Tarkovsky films are probably best spaced out a bit!)
So "Defining Women Filmmakers" gets my vote, and I'm going to take the opportunity to push for Joyce Chopra's Smooth Talk. It's one of the top movies I'd love to hear discussed on the show.
Whichever way it goes, I'll be following along! I hope the FAB conversation generated enough enthusiasm to convince you to do two marathons this year! I've gone all-in with the last six of them (starting with Buster Keaton), and they've become my favorite part of the show.

*PSA: Nosferatu was a limited run that has since ended, but early next year, they'll give a similar treatment to marathon-favorite Sherlock Jr., using music from REM.)

Frankenstein sounds fun, but thinking of the discussions that the Tarkovsky films might spawn makes it irresistible.
