SWFL Traffic Crisis: Do you think the Diverging Diamond Interchange in Fort Myers is improving traffic flow?

First, there is simply too much traffic to have any kind of perfect road system, and the follow-up to that is that you'll never make everyone happy no matter what you come up with. Frankly, people like to bitch.
The intersections would work better if drivers actually stopped at the red light stop lines. Blocking the intersections should draw the attention of the Sheriff's Dept.
The left turn at the main intersection traveling west is the biggest problem and that's the piece FDOT is finishing this weekend. I think getting on 75 north and south is much improved. Getting in the right lane to minimize vehicular conflict is up to drivers to learn/plan accordingly. Final signage will help.
In the end, it is what it is, and what it is is much better than what it was.

    That interchange it's a nightmare!

I will evade the area as long as I can. I will continue using Daniels Parkway. It's look like that Daniels Pkwy is getting worst every day. Real bad for business. But there are a lot of Wal-Marts, Publix and other places to go.

I rather go a little bit farther and use Daniels Parkway. Let the fools use Colonial!

Stop trying to re-invent the wheel. You have spent millions of dollars on a boondoggle. The traffic lights are not synchronized and the concept is counterintuitive to local drivers, not to mention visitors. A simple overpass would have accomplished the efficient flow of traffic without the confusion of directional crossings and misdirection lane changes. It doesn't take rocket science to see this was just a bad idea.

$54million spent and it has only made the intersection worse. The problem was never with the traffic from I75, but rather Ortiz. An overpass would have been much much simpler and less expensive. It works on 41 and colonial, we don't need 3 or more cycles of the lights to get thru that intersection.

While the Diverging Diagonal Pyramid of Painted Lines hasn't yet been completed, I can only assume it was intended to improve the commute for the Lehigh crowd. As a Forum resident, it's been nothing but a zero-sum gain. We still have two lanes at a light for turning left into the Forum south entrance off Colonial and there is still no left turn from eastbound Colonial onto Dynasty Drive. While not part of the project, the north side of the Forum turns out onto MLK/SR 82 and continues to only have one left turn lane westbound, which represents about 85% of the traffic, while the right turn only lane could be used as a KOA Campground. Further, when Canal Street eastbound to Ortiz Avenue, there was an option to carry it over I-75 into the Forum community for easing congestion on Colonial and MLK, as well as serve as a secondary route. Forum Blvd is ready for the traffic, but that didn't happen. So, the Forum is a great place to live, but getting in and out of here is a distant thought in contrast to the 'WHY' behind a DDI. 2 Cents.

I wholeheartedly disagree with this diverging diamond concept. The very idea of causing traffic to switch lanes is crazy. The original overpass and cloverleaf concept may not be perfect but it is significantly better that the diverging diamond. The main problem with the cloverleaf is that they make make the loops too small and too close together. There is no switching lanes nor traffic lights in the middle.

I don’t see that it has helped traffic, but I am willing to give it the benefit of the doubt until it is finished and all lanes are open. A big problem is still traffic from Six Mile tuning right onto Colonial. At certain times of the day the traffic is STILL backed up on Six Mile to the light at Publix…and inconsiderate drivers block intersections and create gridlock! The fault, however, is not FDOT. This intersection was planned quite a few years ago and they thought it would handle future traffic. It is our City and County leaders who are approving every apartment project they are presented with without thinking about the impacts on traffic, water, etc. Why are we always playing catch up with our infrastructure??? I have lived in this area for almost 17 years, and this is the SECOND construction project that has been done in that area! The first was was supposed to solve all of the problems; I sure hope this one does, but I am not optimistic about it.

Until an overpass or two left turn lanes going south are built at Six Mile and Daniel’s Parkway, nothing will help, including another divergent diamond at Daniel’s and I 75. The Three Oaks Extension heading north needs to be fast tracked, and the traffic lights on Daniels need to be synchronized. The main entrance to gulfcoast Medical Center either needs to be off Plantation or a traffic light needs to be placed on Daniels at their entrance, regardless of how close it is to another light. All spring training games need to be coordinated so neither team is playing at the same time on the same day.

We have four or five in the Detroit area. Once ALL the construction is complete, the confusion will go away. They work if they also use AI controlled signals to intelligently keep traffic moving.

The design makes perfect sense and is sufficient in certain areas like fruitville rd in Sarasota. However, even with the diverging diamond open and the offset right turn from Six Mike Cypress, traffic accumulates in copious numbers at the light going into the DDI on Colonial blvd. So one of the problems is that section which is going to be six lanes. With the five open now, I don't think one more will help much. Fort Myers is ready for overpasses.....

This is so scary for us seniors!!!! Bad enough the traffic was bad before but at least I knew what lane to be in!! Now there are no signs and if there are traffic blocks them. Should have over head signs for more information. It's crazy out there! I avoid it at all cost.

We have a new intersection in Grand Rapids Michigan with this configuration as of about three years ago ant it works incredibly well. Once locals became familiar with lanes it was awesome and lights are timed well.

It's fine for now, just need to open all 5 lanes and once the dedicated left turn lanes from westbound colonial onto southbound 6 mile are opened the traffic will be smoother.

I hopefully want them to also close that stupid left turn from colonial into the Walmart side street near the Burger King because that clogs up traffic really horribly as well.

  • Rick - 1 year ago

the biggest thing right now is the project isn’t finished and the lights are not synchronized very well. You can’t make a turn at colonial and 6 mile cypress without sitting through at least three cycles.

On Friday got off 75 southbound to make a left on 6 mile and waited for 4 lights before turning. Before construction it was just as bad never more than 2 lights. I think an overpass would have done better. It was 4 pm

Traffic was bad before the intersection change, but now it seems people can't even tell left from right. The amount of accidents I have almost had in this intersection is absurd, and also there is too much traffic coming and going on 75. I thought maybe a round-about maybe on the sixmile and colonial intersection would make much more sense, since usually from 12:00-1:00 and 5:00-7:00 traffic is bad because of all the restaurants and apartments, having that round about to create a constant flow of traffic may help tremendously with car back-ups.
