Actually it is none of the above.
The answer is a hard none.
There is nothing useful to be had imo for a sore throat consult. Treat symptoms conservatively and watch for any significant clinical changes

Rapid strep +/- a throat culture so you don't get unnecessary antibiotics. Could do the COVID first at home if that is a possibility. Stay out of the ER, so urgent care if need be. Hopefully your PCP has trained staff how to do the swab well so it is all done when the MD/ NP comes by.

I need someone to look and throat, do a rapid strep and maybe a culture so it has to be a physical visit, for now.

If I have a sore throat bad enough to seek care, then I want a provider looking into my throat and swabbing, which requires a physical visit. I'd chose "PCP" office only because I don't want to pay the urgent care co-pay, despite the fact that my PCP requires a 30+ min drive into the city vs two urgent cares that are only a half-mile away.
If it bothered me enough that I felt I needed more than home remedies - PCP first, then urgent care if I can't get in right away - sore throats are tricky, want a provider looking at my throat

It's never me, always my kids. Sore throat with a little upset tummy? It's strep. I go wherever I can get in most quickly, which is either the quick clinic at the drugstore or urgent care.
It depends - 5 weeks ago
If I thought it was viral, I wouldn't worry about a visit. I'd do a home Covid test and if positive, submit a request for Paxlovid by phone. If I thought it may be strep, I'd want a culture and would try together a PCP appointment but most likely I'd have to go to urgent care. Not sure how a virtual visit will help a sore throat.

I would try to make a visit with my PCP if I thought it was strep, but if I couldn’t get in in a reasonable time, I would go to the urgent care to have them swab my throat. If I didn’t think it was strep, I would just treat it myself at home.

I want prompt access, with a provider actually looking at my throat.
