I freaking love love LOVE this AWS and the elements that Julian Lage brings to it (and brings out of Rick).
That said, this matchup is fairly appropriately seeded and the best Arrow of the year (in yet another strong year for Arrow) steamrolls the jazz excursion. Tough matchup for AWS. Buh-bye!
I agree with Momeja that this a cruel matchup! I agree that the AWS is beautiful and joyous and it WAS magical to watch Julian Page and Rick play and dance together--I was lucky enough to be there--on the rail! So... I will swim (desperately) against the stream--as usual--and take the Western Sun! I didn't like it at first. Thought Sage's jazz style was too different and well too--just jazzy-- to really work with the sweet song and Rick's style. But the more I've listened, the more it grows on me. I love Lake;s 2 min opening, I love the song section with all of Lane's fills and jams, and I especially love the--somewhat cacophonous--jazzy, bluesy dance these masters do for the last 9mins of the song. It is probably the most unique entry in the 64 here and that's why I choose it.
We are spoiled with Goose and I admit I have big, heavy jam burn out and probably Arrow burnout. I just don't find this admittedly strong Arrow too different from dozens of other strong Arrow's over the past few years. It also seems to be a less amazing version of the same recipe that is the top four picks of this year. And what is the deal with every top pick Having to have at least 8mins of dark, heavy, dissonant jam in it? I just don't get the adoration for these sinister jams? Maybe I'm just from another, era? They just don't make my ears feel good!

Arrow #1 JOTY. The ending with rick’s solo is face melting. Every second is pure perfection. Arrow has proven itself over the past year and a half. Love this AWS tho , very great sit in.

Great AWS. Fun sit in. But being a sit in is auto DQ for me. AND, this Arrow is just a tour de force. AWS never really stood a chance.
Really cool Lage sit-in. Julian is a monster talent and he does super interesting things with this AWS, but as (more?) importantly he pushes Rick out of his comfort zone into exploratory and unfamiliar jazzy spaces. It's absolutely worth a few listens to hear the joy of two guitar virtuosos playing off each other and clearly having a ton of fun.
But c'mon, this Arrow is a legit JOTY candidate. I'll write more about it when faces stiffer competition.

This AWS got the same ill treatment that a few other notable jams did this year in terms of seeding. It's amazing.
That said, this Arrow may very well win it all. It's exceptional. Sorry AWS :(

Lage has monster contributions all his own. But listen to him pull Rick into a jazzy, angular space. 1+1=3 stuff.

This is a cruel match up. This AWS is one of the most beautiful and joyous pieces of jamming ever. To watch Julian Lage and Rick having a conversation with their guitars onstage is pure poetry in sound. I only wish I'd been there to see it live. And to have it go up against the monster Fox Arrow in the first round is not how it should have gone down and not the end it deserves. AWS is still and will remain my #1 JOTY for 2025, even though I realize that it isn't and can't be the Goose JOTY. Still, listen to it again and love it while it's here. It will be gone tomorrow.
