I love the Greek Drip. It’s one of my favorite jams from last year and one I know I’ll listen to over and over again bc I already have. But I don’t think it can slay the Rockdale in the next round, and I believe this excellent and beautiful Myst can. Go Myst.
Momeja - 9 months ago
Cap Myst has a better chance against the Rockdale. The Greek Drip is one of my favorite jams of last year. I could listen to it over and over again and I have, but I don’t think it can slay the monster it would be up against next round. A vote for the Myst is a vote against Rockdale.

Kennet, I will see your comment and raise you "if you're not temporarily eviscerating the jam you enjoy marginally less than the one you're voting for are you even JOTY'ing"
Plus, see Officer B's comments. He really makes you think ????

Kennett - 9 months ago
Cptn et al. Enough of the 1/2 Step bashing. It has aspects of three types of jams in it and none of them are "recycled". It has bliss at the beginning that is similar to the bliss in the RB it is up against. It has a heavy, distorted, "evil" jam in the middle that is similar to the end of the Tumble and many other jams that have been deified this year and last. Then it settles down to a somewhat blissy, rhythmic, rolling ending which is not to different from parts of the ME Wysteria that voters are so wild about. It has a lot going for it and the "song" portion of it is nearly perfect. I prefer the RB by a sliver because of the ultra sweet ending, but no need to piss on this excellent 1/2 step.

Pretty tough matchup. I was at the Fox, and remember thinking “Is this still Half-Step?” Great stuff. The first part of the jam is definitely worthy of JOTY. The second half fizzles.
I’m voting Red Bird.

Imagine thinking this Haf-Step deserves to be an Elite 8 jam

The 1/2 step jam may be familiar territory for the band but that doesn’t mean it’s not a great jam. It’s a cover yes but we are voting for the jams not the songs. Vote for this 1/2 step!

This is a bit tough for me. I love the song 1/2 Step and this is a great one. I'd like to see 1/2 Step go on for diversity sake. I like the Red Bird a lot but think it is maybe the weakest of the Cap selections in the Sweet Sixteen (along with Myst). But...I still think the Red Bird jam is sweeter and more special than the 1/2 Step one. I agree with Dan that that Trevor is the star of RB Jam. The last few mins are truly beautiful and special so RB gets my vote here--despite the fact that I think Cap Drive and Pancakes are about 5 times more special. JVG summed up my thoughts pretty perfectly in his analysis..

The first 2/3 of this HS is like the first 2/3 of Cap Drive. Excellent.
The last 1/3 ...is not.
JVG - 9 months ago
After a few back-to-back listens, I've got an opinion that'll make no one in this heated matchup happy; both of these are a little over-rated and over-seeded. Both have sizable sections that could be dropped and not affect the overall quality of the jam (and arguably improve it). But the Bird works better as a complete jam and the build into the last 7-8 mins and ensuing segment are more interesting and creative than anything in the Half-Step. The Bird is also a very very phishy jam, which can be a compliment or a criticism depending on your musical preferences. I really like them both, but don't absolutely love either. Great matchup though.
Bird gets my vote.

Seeing the Red Bird live, I knew immediately it had wheels to finish as one of the best JOTY (and my #2 behind Rockdale). The final 10 minutes is a masterpiece, with the synchronization of all pieces of the band in a whirling-dirvish of frenzy but also amazing patience displayed throughout. That final chord they hit is tension/build-up/peak is all about...FLY HIGH BIRD!!!
JonB - 9 months ago
Attended both shows and this is truly a tossup. Voting for the Bird, but both are worthy elite eight songs.

Thought the bird was better. Great half-step, been loving that song for 40 years. Always happy when I hear it and the Atlanta jam is incredible. Redbird is a top jam vehicle and this one has it.

The half step rips and I won't be mad if it wins but I got the Bird. It's just a little more interesting for me.

I thought I was done; I’m not.
Someone mentioned that it’s not enough to fluff one jam, and that it’s important to address the other. Sure. So here’s my thoughts on Half-Step:
The first half is excellent two-guitar Goose, a good facsimile of the extraordinary Cap Drive. (That’s both my compliment and where my nice things today about the Half Step end.)

This Red Bird is a top 5 jam of 2024. It has a unique slow-build into a majestic finish that will hopefully prevail over this very good half-step.
Mike’s Unchained - 9 months ago
I hope the Red Bird prevails. The Opening Jam #1 section is probably the most moving minutes of improv I’ve heard from Goose. I had this at #5 on my bracket. What a great JOTY competition this year.

Standing in solidarity with @6R0M7 (no surprises there) and all fellow Red Bird aficionados. You know who you are and when you've got something good
It's time for this Bird to fly on through to the next round!
Tug - 9 months ago
Love Half-Step. Love Bird. At the end of the day, this is definitely the most interesting and adventurous Half-step jam they've performed. But it does tread on old themes and the last third of it gets tiresome. I'll take the Red Bird and its more consistent flow and more cosmic vibe.
J - 9 months ago
This red bird is nothing short of utter magic. Trevor musically speaks to the band mid song and starts pulling everyone in to what is now referred to as opening jam #1 from the rehearsal recordings given out to bingo winners post goosmas. The section at the end of the jam almost brings tears to my eyes.
Shannon - 9 months ago
It’s a beautiful Red Bird, but this Mississippi gets better each time I hear it. I love Dan’s description, couldn’t agree more. Once it kicks into drive mode, the band clicks in and it’s a masterful joy ride from there. For me, the Red Bird really soars at the end, but the Half Step has me jamming all the way through. Close matchup!

This Red Bird is a top 5 jam of 2024. It’s disappointing it was under seeded. Great matchup overall but Cap Red Bird deserves better.
Cptn_Incredible - 9 months ago
The thought of this insanely majestic Red Bird possibly not making it through this round makes my heart hurt
Especially when the competition is a serviceably performed recycled jam, tacked onto a Dead cover in an otherwise lackluster show, which I had slotted as my #27 overall (this Red Bird is my #3, she's a one-seed!)
Seanny Mac - 9 months ago
Toodeloo. That is all.
Momeja - 9 months ago
Lovely Red Bird but this is not a challenge. The 1/2 Step jam is beautifully complex, and as an old Deadhead, I love hearing how the band makes the song their own. They take it to new places and new heights. Jerry is certainly smiling down in approval.
John - 9 months ago
Possibly the finest cover ever jammed
Dan - 9 months ago
The Cap Bird was great. Trevor being the MVP of that jam especially late. It’s a jam that is definitely deserving of its seed and position in the sweet 16. On the flip side, this Mississippi was one of my favorite jams of the year. A blissy jam that locks in and builds with blistering intensity just gets you ready to run through a wall. Then settles into a fun and cool grove for a few great minutes. This jam deserves to move on to the next round. I’m voting Mississippi.
