Hardest vote of the play-in round for me. Not only are these both movies I adore; they both were far and away my #1 picks of their respective years. The choice is so agonizing, I refuse to confess which way I went in the end. Either option feels shameful to admit.

    Aftersun!

  • Richard Holland - 4 weeks ago

These both should be in. Being forced to pick Aftersun was such an impressive, heartbreaking, brilliant executed film. Unique in so many ways, I don’t see it winning overall, but it deserves its place with the best of the era.

1000% Aftersun, because Past Lives is one of the most overrated films of the 2020s and Aftersun is a masterpiece that's burrowed its way into my soul ever since watching it. Charlotte Wells is a special artist.

Past Lives, and it's not even close for me.

  • Robert Gibbons - 4 weeks ago

Past Lives was excellent, but Aftersun can safely be labeled a masterpiece in my opinion.

Already the excruciating decisions! Two films with an afterglow that will stay with you with weeks, both made with such personal passion. Which did I choose? Both, one vote on my phone and one on my work phone. I can have it both ways, but only when the stakes are so high.

The nice thing about knowing Josh stays out of the Madness chaos is I’ll be able to see him in Boulder in a few weeks and not scream “REALLY?! AFTERSUN VERSUS PAST LIVES YOU MANIAC?!”

These were my favorite films of both 2022 and 2023. So, as an exercise in visiting the past, I went back to my Letterboxd reviews of these two films. I nearly teared up with a huge lump in my throat as I read through each one. Each film dives into the depths of who we are as human beings, as neither the sum of the parts of our past nor separate from those parts. Each film made me want to understand myself and those around me deeply. And it was extremely painful to know that these wouldn’t both be in the tournament. I made a choice, but I refuse to say which one because in the future I might relive this painful moment you guys have forced me into through some beautifully painful cinematic dream, not unlike each of these films.

This vote is almost as heartbreaking as each of these movies...
