@6R0M7 - Thank you for the comment. I love synchronicities! I agree wholeheartedly about the community, you all make me smile daily. My roots are Phish and the Dead, saw my first Goose show on Valentine’s Day in SF 2020, and fell in love at the SF Wysteria show. Very similarly, it was when I discovered JOTY last year and got involved that I fell in love with the community too. It makes every day brighter. I’m pretty active in El Goose if you’re on FB (Maxine Shannon - I go by my middle name) or you can find me on the dance floor. :) Always a pleasure to make new friends!
And big shout out to AAT and everyone who makes this possible. We appreciate that you put this together every year! It helps us revisit the best moments of the previous year, brings community together, and may even elevate consciousness by listening to these incredible jams every day. You all are the best! Looking forward to next year already and seeing how many early jams make the finals again!

For me, music is emotional, something to not only react to but to feel with something deeper, and a way to escape from the realities of the world. This is why I think people react so favorably to the “dark” jams. I used to remember listening to Phish jams like the Carini Amsterdam 97, Runaway Jim 11.29.97, BigCypress Mike's over and over again whenever I wanted to feel something industrial and dark from music, and it wasn’t until the SF Wysteria that I truly connected with another band as much as I did with Phish. Goose is able to create that e moment of magic that very few bands can. The Philly Tumble is one of their best examples of a slow collective build where each time you think it hits its peak, it finds another gear. But it doesn't get dark enough. Still a few hours left. Wake up the kitchens, call your family, let's create a movement of darkness.
That’s a metric ton to the AAT podcast team for once again organizing the bracket and letting us revisit their best jams from the last year.
Until next year,

For me, music is emotional, something to not only react to but to feel with something deeper, and a way to escape from the realities of the world. This is why I think people react so favorably to the “bliss” jams. I used to remember listening to Phish jams like the 12/31/93 Hood, Halloween 94 Reba, 7/4/99 Slave over and over again whenever I wanted to feel something special from music, and it wasn’t until the Mission Arcadia that I truly connected with another band as much as I did with Phish. Goose is able to create that euphoric moment of magic that very few bands can. The Philly Tumble is possibly their best example of this, a slow collective build where each time you think it hits its peak, it finds another gear. Cap Drive is one of their best examples of a multi-sectional “has-it-all” jam and would have been a deserving champion too, but ultimately I’m also on Team Philly Tumble because of how the jam makes me feel.
That’s a ton to the AAT podcast team for once again organizing the bracket and letting us revisit their best jams from the last year.

@Shannon: I just read what you wrote about the comments here about five mins after I sent a friend a note asking “Who’s Shannon? Her comments have been super thoughtful.” Synchronicity.
I discovered the band in late 19, fell for them when I finally saw them live in 21, and discovered this whole community when the 21 JOTY ran. That really sealed it for me. A great group of kind and smart and fun folks — many of whom I talk to daily now. I’d care a lot less about the band without the community surrounding it.
Great to have you here.

Shout out to everyone who comments on these polls. I have seen some of the best writing about live music and what makes these jams special and unique. So many good points! They were well written, well thought out, funny, and insightful. You all have made this journey way more fun, thank you!
Shannon - 9 months ago
While the first half of this Tumble falls a little flat for me, it easily makes up for it with one of the most well executed jams of the year in the second half. Blissful and fun to jam to at the end, it’s got it all. I streamed it live and have no attendance bias, but I remember how good the vibes were. Peak summer Goose goodness!
What I really love about this Drive is that it makes me feel it all. It has this powerful driving energy through the entire journey, leading to new landscapes that they develop so thoroughly before the path effortlessly meanders on. I feel heart. I feel soul. I feel passion. It inspires me to dance and pour everything I feel into the moment. And somehow the energy we all create transcends the body, all time and space, and reaches a joyful, heart-pounding catharsis that soars into the ethers. I am beyond grateful to have been there in the moment dancing my heart out with everyone. What a triumphant moment!
I went into this vote thinking one thing, and after listening to both finalists one more time, I’m giving my vote to the jam that took everyone pouring their heart and soul into the moment to create. Divinely inspired jams are phenomenal, but magic happens when we all fly together. Go Goose!

See you next year for more snark and condescension, but always in good fun.

Cptn_Incredible - 9 months ago
For the 2nd year in a row, Cap Drive isn't my personal JOTY but it is superb sublime beyond exquisite and I have it as a 1-seed and wouldn't be mad if it won the whole thing.
Also for the 2nd year in a row, the "crowd" favorite from Philly is an elite jam that I find very enjoyable but I hav it as a 3-seed, not really top of the pack IMO. But easy enough to understand what people like about it and why it could inspire a populist movement.
Some of us would prefer to be challenged, journey before destination. Some of us want to skip right to the money shot, one thing done really well with an extra scoop of shredfest. And some of us just want to watch the world burn.

Boooorrrinnggggg… I still can’t get over how Philly tumble is considered remarkably better than the previous week’s fox tumble when the opposite is true. This is result of playing an elongated kept in the box bliss peak at their biggest show to date. The attendance bias is deafening. The first half of the jam? Cookie cutter and flubbed. The best thing I can say is that Rick gave it the extra sauce in a mini jam after they returned to the ending. Ok… now that I got that all off my chest… CONGRATS to Philly tumble and JUZZLE and I’m very happy to everyone so touched by this band and this version. Thanks to the pod for putting this together. 2024 was a year for the record books from top to bottom. Love everyone and the discourse and this band!!!!!!

Lucky enough to have seen both of these in person
This Tumble is Rick rising to the occasion in front of the biggest audience they ever had to that point. Incredible.

Both are landmark jams. Gotta go with Drive because I just love what Pete is doing throughout

I'm team Drive on this one, but both jams are top tier. Philly Tumble is an awe-inspiring, tear-jerking, soaring triumph of a jam, no doubt. It's always been in my top 15 and I will enjoy it for years to come. What gives Cap Drive the slight edge, though (to me), is that it *also* has an awe-inspiring, tear-jerking, soaring triumph of a jam (the third jam) *in addition to* a ferocious, psychedelic two-guitar jam *and* a flawless segue into a trippy, double-time marimba jam. The counterargument (against Drive) is that three quarters are still less than a dollar.
I.e., yes, Drive may have more "parts," but it doesn't have a single part that achieves the heights of Philly Tumble's grand climb. But I think both Drive's two-guitar jam and its ending bliss jam achieve incredible heights. I also think that the ending bliss jam of Drive is all the more powerful given the 20 minutes that preceded it.
At the end of the day, though, all is well in the world of Goose. Just look at this year's Elite 8 - IMHO the best Elite 8 yet (and it didn't even include my JOTY pick!). Better yet, start listening to the madness that was already played in 2025 . . .
Thanks again to the AATG crew + Adam + the fans for making this tournament so much fun!

Following JOTY has been a great vehicle to relisten to so much great music from 2024, and outside of seeing my favorite go down early to a cover, it’s been super fun to see everyone’s different takes and opinions! After Eugene Pancakes, which brings tears every time at the peak still, Philly Tumble really nailed me on the first listen, and I had a feeling it would be the eventual winner of this contest. I’ll try to be less emo about my disappointment next year when West coast jams are underseeded and overlooked, I totally get it
Neal - 9 months ago
Despite what people will have you believe, I support both of these jams. I've been vocal about what makes a jam "the best" in my eyes and Drive has all of those qualities. Having said that, Tumble has one of the most exquisite improvised guitar solos I've ever heard. I was lucky enough to be in attendance for both and I walked away from 4/7 with a much higher opinion of the Drive than I did on 6/28 with Tumble, but everyone's taste is their own and it seems as though mine doesn't match some others' and that's OK! Maybe the real JOTY is telling Juzzle to GFH in a loving way?
Seep-up CO - 9 months ago
Not even voting - the Madhuvan or Rockdale should have won this hands down…….. the Tumble is awesome…… but come on folks, the jams in the Madhuvan and the Rockdale are just on another level. One big factor for jams, at least in my opinion, is the band ability to bring it back into the original song in a fantastic way. The Marhuvan and Rockdale did that - spectacularly. When the band can bring you back from the outer limits of your mind, that’s when a song can really just vibrate in your soul..

Only one of these jams chokes me up, gives me chills, and sends me into space. And to only one of these jams do I know that I'll still be returning, time after time, 10 years from now: DRIVE!! This Drive has everything and more. I love the Drive more and more every time I listen to it. It's a beautiful, glorious jam, and it deserves to be this year's JOTY.
Momeja, I loved your post. You are entirely right about the Tumble having an ALL TIME Great peak after a glorious bliss jam. It is amazing!
But the Cap DRIVE is just a tiny bit more Amazing--to me! Peter's extended, raunchy, retro, angry guitar rhythm set against glorious alternating Rich leads, blasting Trevor bass and perfect Cotter (and Jeff) lockstep percussion just takes you on a voyage that few other jams can approximate--at least from start to finish as this one does!
These jams are both unreal--amazing--transformative! THE DRIVE just grabs harder and quicker and takes me further! I hope it doers for you too! DRIVE JOTY!

Tumble. I go to it over and over again. I love Cotter and how he came out ready to GO! with the cap Drive and he's proved himself over and over again since joining the band. But the Tumble is truly a masterpiece and has earned and deserves JOTY.

Only one of these jams chokes me up, gives me chills, and sends me into space. And only one of these jams do I know that I'll still be returning to 5 years from now. Tumble. This Tumble has everything and more. It has a story - beginning, middle, and end - and a tremendous extended peak too. And it also has what many great bliss jams lack. After the peak, the jam doesn't just end abruptly, leaving you hanging, the way many bliss jams do, as the band did in Portland or Raleigh. Instead it keeps going for another 5 glorious minutes as it rushes you down the mountainside to its conclusion. I love the Tumble more and more every time I listen to it. It's a beautiful, glorious jam, and it deserves to be this year's JOTY.

Oh, boy. My #1 (Drive) vs. My #3 (Tumble). I streamed Drive and attended Tumble. Both blew me away. I'm voting Drive, but there are no losers today. In fact, for the first time since '21, I'll be happy with either winning.
Not much to say that hasn't already been said.
Cap Drive is flawless end-to-end, with one of the greatest two-guitar sections they've played and a very fulfilling extended outro. It was the jam that told us everything would be ok, and it has been. It never left my top 3, and sat in the pole position since about June.
Tumble is such a ride. I remember being on that sweaty balcony at the Mann feeling like I was levitating and that my mind had left my body. All the talk about other JOTY contenders being Goose at their blissy best seems to forget that an incredible bliss section sits in the middle of this Tumble. The fun peak — and, yeah, it's a great peak — is just the icing on the cake. Don't sleep on Peter being nasty on keys, texturizing all over that peak. He complimented Rick for it being one of his best; he also complemented Rick with undergirding to enable it.
What a great tournament, once again. Huge props to the AAT guys for running this each year. _RESPECT_

What a great 18 months this JOTY has been. Vote Tumble and see you in 2026!
6/28 was my first show but cap was my first stream. Tumble had me slack jawed for 20 mins. It was insane
Cap drive has the goods!!
philly going to bring another joty home
::: cracks knuckles :::
_RESPECT_
i hate the city of Philadelphia. it lives in my nightmares. but this tumble is a master jam. the cap is basically a hometown venue for me and i hate to bid drive farewell, but it has to be done. you did good drive and number 2 is still worth celebrating but this tumble is taking the crown
Not much left to say but it's a beautiful day outside and I'm going to listen to the JOTY while I walk today at lunch. All hail Philly Tumble! Perfect day to crown it.
Bow down the the king.
TUMBLE FOR JOTY!!
DRIVE FOR JOTY!
Thank you for coming to vote Tumble your JOTY. I'd like to give a special shout out to this community, the great city of Philadelphia, and to the agony Neal and YR will feel when Tumble wins
