Two of my all-time favorite movies facing off in the first round is truly Madness.
(Slight spoiler for Arrival) At their core, both of these movies are about the messiness and beauty of being a parent, even if one is unvarnished and the other sleek. Ultimately, the message at the core of Arrival is something that shocked me on first watch and stays with me years later. At least we'll have that fading image of Willem Dafoe smoking at dusk before Florida Project goes into the incinerator.

I couldn't believe that Arrival needed a play-in to make the list at all, and though I love The Florida Project, I still constantly think about the choice Amy Adams' character has to make in Arrival. It's the capstone of a great sci-fi movie and top 5 for me on this entire bracket.

Florida Project was good, but Arrival is my top movie of the century (and millennium) so far.

A sentiment I'm going to experience a lot in this tournament: huh, this hurts more than I thought. Both of these films are about hope and despair and kindness and that makes it quite challenging to choose between them, but I went with Florida Project's lived acts of kindness over the more speculative hope of Arrival (I suspect I am in the minority on this).

Just imagine which would be harder to tell that they're going into the incinerator: a weird tentacle alien or Moonee's tiny face.
