If you look at my Letterboxd, Moonlight has a higher star rating than Ocean's Eleven. But, in the heat of madness, I voted for Soderbergh. Can't imagine a world without one of the best movie star ensembles of all time!

This matchup is diabolical. I can't even compare their musical scores. Moonlight is such an achingly tender look at identity and all the ways we both embrace and struggle with who we are. Not to mention Mahershala Ali's performance lives rent-free in my mind. Then you have Ocean's Eleven... it's all the evidence you need that a film with all style and very little substance can still be incredibly compelling and such a joy to experience. (Plus, for how many other movies can you say that an objectively terrible British accent actually ADDS to the enjoyment?) I cannot in good conscience vote against Moonlight, and yet I'm furious to likely say goodbye to Ocean's in round 1. Congrats, Filmspotting - you will have blood on your hands after incinerating one of the most pleasurable movies of all time.

I have no doubt Moonlight will win this matchup and I have it winning the whole tournament in my prediction. It's a beautiful story with a gorgeous backdrop and deserves all its aclaim. But Ocean's Eleven is one of my favorite movies of all time, I've seen it countless times. It's one of the most fun rides you'll ever get in a movie and it gets my pick here. The house always wins. Unless... when that perfect hand comes along, you bet big, and you take the house.

I feel really weird voting for Ocean's Eleven over Moonlight. This was never a matchup I thought I would see, but here it is. At the end of the day, though these two movies couldn't be more different, I must admit that I think they are both expertly constructed, and while Moonlight provokes deep thoughts and feelings in me, Ocean's brings me joy and pleasure over and over and over again. Which is why my vote goes to one of the greatest heist movies of all time.

Call me a philistine, but I'll take a gleeful and well constructed romp like Oceans Eleven over a bleak and well constructed character portrait like Moonlight every single time.

I absolutely believe that Steven Soderbergh was wildly successful at smuggling avant-garde visuals in as the essence of cool and got a bunch of charismatic actors in to sell it to the world and it worked and I love Ocean's Eleven for that reason, but it cannot compete with Barry Jenkin's gorgeous film, which is operating on a different emotional level entirely and I have to go with Moonlight here.

Now I'm voting Moonlight out of spite. People REALLY thought Ocean's Eleven needed to be here over Assassination of Jesse James?! REALLY?!
