If the premise of The Lobster were made by anyone else, it'd appear on a "Worst of Sundance" list the year it came out, then fade into obscurity. Only Filippou and Lanthimos can combine absurdity, humor, and commentary without coming off as glib, smug, and irritating. One of my all time favorite films.

Shame that both are not the directors strongest works and middle tier. Pans Labyrinth gets it by default

When I saw “Pan’s Labyrinth” lose the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, I thought, “How on earth could another film have beaten it?” And then I saw “The Lives of Others” and I finally understood. Now that you have somehow left out “The Lives of Others” from even being considered for the entire bracket, I am committed to voting for “Pan’s Labyrinth” for as long as it remains in tournament.

This one was a nightmare!

I love The Lobster, I think it's unhinged in a way that makes it incredibly insightful, but Pan's Labyrinth is a gorgeously realized allegory of a moment in the past that is pretty urgently relevant now, so it's getting my vote (it also helps fill A Shape of Water sized hole in my heart).

This matchup does reek of xenophobia tho'

This one really hurt me.

The most brutal match-up of the first round for me. These are both Top 10 films of the millenium in my book.

Please let Del Toro's only movie in the tournament survive the first round, pleeeeease.
