P.S. In the Mood for Love should have been up against Portrait of a Lady on Fire. :-D

In the Mood for Love is rightfully a classic, but Power of the Dog wins the nuance wars – and with a more satisfying (if far darker) ending to boot.

I always feel like a hater for In The Mood For Love because the praise for it is often effusive, but I actually still gave it 4 stars for pure stylishness. Power of the Dog I remember fondly for it's great acting and several standout sequences, but gave only 3.5 stars due to what I felt was unfulfilled promise in character study. Memory is a funny thing. See you in the next round, Wong Kar Wai.

The list of great directors that are going to be already out of the tournament after the first round is kind of wild.
