Another matchup that physically pains me. Having revisited Inside Llewyn Davis more recently than La La Land, I can't believe I'm voting against it. But, Chazelle's musical has been so maligned in the wake of its infamous Best Picture loss that it might actually be starting to be underrated in cinephile circles. Chazelle is one of "my guys," and because I won't have the opportunity to champion Babylon in this tourney (one day!), I had to give him my vote here.
Trashing La La Land is so hacky. Voted for ILD because it’s my favorite Coens but La La Land fucks 4ever.
Oh, great. Another movie about starry-eyed dreamers chasing fame in a world that’s just so gosh-darn magical. Let me guess—their struggles are endearing, their setbacks temporary, and even when they fail, they do it beautifully under the glow of some vintage streetlamp. How inspiring.
Here’s the thing: life isn’t a Technicolor dance number, and talent doesn’t always come with a happy ending. Sometimes you play your heart out in a half-empty dive bar while some guy in the back asks if you “do requests.” Sometimes you wake up on someone’s couch with nothing but your guitar and the creeping realization that maybe you’re not special.
