    Battleground: Great Titles

How was "There Will Be Blood" just sitting there waiting for PTA?
"Arriva" is accurate on 3 (4?) levels, and still evocative.

I finally caught up with TWBB, a movie that I've long avoided because of the combination of its reputation and my ambivalence to PTA as a whole. It's not as perfect as the hype would have led me to believe, but it's still better than any other PTA film I've seen except maybe The Master. Enough to beat Arrival, although I feel good about my choice to have No Country overtake it in the next to last round.

Do I most need my kids to see a vivid portrait of the disease? or a simple, aching portrayal of the (paradoxical) path of healing? Arrival every time.

Agreed, Ryan. Magnolia and BN are straight shots of adrenaline for me, while TWBB leaves me cold. I'll take the ambitious and heartfelt Arrival every time.

Ok, you'll have to count me as someone who doesn't really GET There Will be Blood. I love many PTA movies, in particular Magnolia and Boogie Nights, and there's no doubt TWBB is shot and acted beautifully. But it's one of those movies that had me asking, "What's the point?"

And now it's up against one of my favorites in the whole thing, that undoubtedly will not make it past this round because you can't be a a "film fan" if you don't think TWBB is one of the best of this century, and perhaps beyond. But Arrival very much has the kind of point that appeals to me at a very deep level, a story about a woman who chooses to do a thing even though she KNOWS it has a devasting ending.

So Arrival will get my vote, and I'll hope that there are enough others like me out there that will take the hope and humanity of Arrival over the, well, Blood and Depravity of There Will Be Blood.

    Damn it....I should have said:

    Departing immediately, Arrival

Round two starts off with a bruiser, a battle between a sensitive, beautifully shot story of all that humans can be and harsh, beautifully shot examination of, well, all that humans can be. I voted for There Will Be Blood, but I did not feel good about it.

Those aliens may have crushed a poor child's Disney dreams, but they're not cut out for the business of oil.

    Byeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Arrival

Two classics that both remind me of different aspects of my life, but as a professional translator I have to go with Arrival, lol. Plus, the alien design is so cool!
