I find myself surprised to be voting against David Lynch, but it feels so natural.

Terrible bracket. I would easily place these two films in the elite eight, if not the final four. "Portrait" is one of my favorite films of the century, but "Mulholland" is one of the all time great film enigmas. I went MD, but didn't like having to make that choice.

What a heartbreaker of a matchup. In this year, of all years, it would be great for Lynch to get his due. But in a way, I think Lynch's most towering achievement, Twin Peaks and Twin Peaks the Return aren't up for the incinerator and as much as I will miss Club Silencio, Portrait of a Lady of Fire is a fine candidate to go far in this tournament, a gorgeous and insightful film. It might be too soon for it to get it's full due, but it's Top Five of the century for me, so I'll vote for it as long as I can.

I think the outcome of this is pretty clear but there's going to be a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth all the same.

According to my own bracket, Mulholland Drive is going to take down a SLEW of A-list films on its way to the championship battle, and this is where it starts. Yet, even as an David Lynch super-fan, I put my vote in for Portrait. I can't ever recall seeing a movie that felt like such an instant classic. And since my only other possible choice for best film of the quarter-century didn't even make it into madness whatsoever, I'll be rooting for the Lady on Fire to burn this whole thing down.

I think MD is the dark horse in this tournament and may have some momentum with the recent David Lynch passing.... but honestly on merit alone, it’s worth winning the whole dang thing!
