Should priests be required to report evidence of child sex abuse, even if they learn of it during a confession?

Those who vote "no" or "undecided" are just as bad as those who commit the crime. They all will stand before God in judgement one day.

This is a hard one, while knowing someone is possibly abusing a child should be reported… I do believe as a catholic that what is said in the confessional shoukd be jsut between you and the priest… same with your lawyer and doctor…. I voted no, but with our world the way it is, and let’s face it some priest are actually the people abusing children…. I am gonna have to pray in this one!!

One of my neighbors was a big giver to the Catholic Church in our town, so the priest and nuns would come over for a luncheon a couple times a year. She had stated one time that she couldn’t wait until they came over this one time because they discuss what the priest would hear in confession and they knew who was the confessor. That’s when I lost faith in churches and religions. Nothing is secret and what happens in the dark always comes into the light. If a child is being harmed the priest should inform the police.

A priest won't know who the person was because they hear so many confessions and if they don't meet face to face the priest will not be able to recognize the person.

Any child must be protected at all costs must be protected. To not do so would be displeasure to God. A man made law claiming to protect a child abuser and get him forgiven by God is absolute nonsense. Check the matter out in the Bible, God's direct instructions to us. Priests must inform police immediately.
