Retool, not rebuild….Trade marketable players such as Sugano & O’Hearm ,while their value is high, for either MLB ready prospects or pitching. Resign Mullins for a short term extension…Build around the nucleus of Adley, Gunnar, Holliday, Cowser, and Westburg. Build the staff around Povich and the returning Bradish

The value for Mayo, Kjerstad, Mateo and even Rutschman and Montcastle has declined significantly, while Westburg and Cowser have had numerous injury problems. Unless the O's are serious about resigning their pending free agents, trade them. Other than O'Hearn, none of the hitters are hitting to their potential so their trade value is minimal. The Orioles may have the greatest collection of AAA hitters in MLB history, but it apparently does not translate into major league success. Nothing more needs to be said about the pitching staff. Sugano and Eflin are the only ones to show any consistency, and there is no guarantee that the return of the injured pitchers later this season will solve the pitching woes. Elias has a lot to prove after his disastrous off-season acquisitions has sent this team into a downward spiral. O'Neill? Morton? Gibson? And enough of the one year rentals.

Yes, the Orioles jumped up from $90M in payroll last year to $155M this year, but they did not get any star P with that. So yes this year there are injuries to starting pitchers but they need to spend another $25 to 30M and get a stud for the next three years. And while they’re at it, they need to get rid of whoever is running the throwing program for their P. So many arm injuries is not a coincidence!

Trade any (or a mix of) over-performing vet(s) and underperforming prospect(s) for a younger star pitcher that has several years of control left. For example, O'Hearn and Mayo for Bubba Chandler and a mid-tier prospect.

Do not sign a one year rental. Begin extending contracts to provide stability. If an opportunity for a good player to be signed on a 2-3 year contract, especially a pitcher, sign him.

Trade for a front line starter.

  • Jim Loving - 6 months ago

Depends on where the Os are on 7/15. Today, 5/26, they are 9 games back of wild card. If they are within 4-5 at trade deadline, then they should be prrudent in who they pursue. Given this start, the general approach should be to improve the team for the 2nd half and next year.

    Pitching, pitching and more pitching!

  • Bernard - 6 months ago

The Orioles need to sure up an inconsistent bullpen.
The starters will come around and be serviceable.

    Oh, and bring up Basallo!

  • Margaret Goodlin - 6 months ago

Trade for pitching. Trade Mountcastle, Bautista, Cano, Morton, Mullins (reluctantly), Go for a star.

  • Herb Hopkins - 6 months ago

My favorite player for the past 3 years has been Ryan O'Hearn. Trade him at the deadline and sign him long-term next winter. What a story!

If the management is going allow the impending free agents to leave unsigned they might as well trade them while they can still get something in return.

The Orioles have an outside chance to get to the playoffs if they get Brandish, Rodriguez, Tyler, Suarez, Cowser and Westburg back for most of the 2nd half of the year and can keep their head above water in the meantime. There is no short term fix and they should not in any way weaken their potential for future years by making a trade now. With that in mind, they should consider trading impending free agents if they are sure to leave or otherwise wouldn’t figure into planning for next year.

Be selective! Definitely keep cornerstones like O'Hearn and Mullins who will help us win next year and continue to aid in the development of our young players. Trade disappointing veterans like O'Neill and Sanchez for whatever young pitching prospects we can get and let young Oriole prospects take their roster spots.

The trade deadline is 2 months away, 56 games, which is more games than we've played to date. The front office should be preparing for and exploring each of these scenarios. Trading impending free agents may be the more probable option but it's premature to setle on one approach now.

Listen there is no fixing this situation, unfortunately the damage has been done and the only thing left is to trade everybody except Henderson, holiday , Cowser and westburg. We should get back about 12 prospects and hope that you can find 3 players . Elias shouldn’t be allowed to ever be a gm again even if it’s McDonald’s. He single handedly sabotaged an entire organization and it’s absolutely shameful that we are now where we’re at.

Every effort should be made to acquire the three key missing pieces: 1) An ace starting pitcher, 2) A right handed hitting power bat to hit cleanup, 3) A left handed closer-type reliever.

Mountcastle, Mayo, & Kjerstad lead the list of prominent trade pieces.

Trading for stars over the past two seasons was the right idea, but it put a big dent in the farm system, and hasn't generated the expected results. Doing it again this season, with the team so far out of contention, would be foolish.

So would blowing up the team and trading young stars who ate still under team control. The core of this team still has a lot of potential. Better to let go the impending free agents,
    and restock the farm.

I believe we should at least trade for whatever potential pitching ace we can make a semblance of a deal with, whether that requires trading free agent(s) or multiple prospect/free agent packages. We’ve made grave errors in both the past deadline as well as offseason. It’s absolutely clear we have at best average starters for mid rotation. We need at least one clear ace the offense can look forward to allowing them not to press to carry pitchers. We also need to shake up the bullpen. I’ve cringed all season whenever Perez was put in and every game it came true. Rubinstein said he was willing to spend so let’s do it. When the Corbin Burnes issue came up in offseason he just wanted a longer contract but Mike Elias insisted on only 4 years. For years the O’s have been stingy with pitching. We don’t draft them high and if we manage to develop them we trade them. We need to start paying attention to pitching as opposed to positional players! I personally wish Cal would take over as GM at least in the interim until we can find a proven GM and go really hard to get at least a top caliber starter and another good mid rotation guy and maybe add to the bullpen. Once our IL returns we have plenty of prospects. Definitely trade Coby Mayo he’s stuck in AAA he needs to go to a team willing to give him reps and in turn we can get something for him. Sign our big hitters to long term extensions and get rid of some of our free agents though not all of them,

Go for a low cost rental pitcher. There is plenty of talent at Norfolk and Bowie. If there is a trade market for people such as Mateo, Rivera, Sanchez or Handley, they can be cashed in, put the Orioles shouldn't be dumping future all stars for prospects, or for a rental who might turn out to be the next Jack Flaherty or Trevor Rodgers.
