Are US citizens losing their First Amendment rights?

First Amendment rights are finally recovering with the death spiral of PC and left-wing fringe censorship. Hope that the Courier will eventually follow suit.

The students targeted for their participation in Palestinian protests is a prime example of the erosion of free speech. I think this is why we are seeing less student involvement and activism this year.

It is strange and sad that we seem to have two sets of "facts" now. We are hearing what the algorithms from our social media providers feed us based on our searches and reading habits. I guess this would have to be expected since the internet and the very wealthy people that control social media got way ahead of Congress and there are, for all intensive purposes no controls. This country once had "Truth in Advertising" requirements for what we saw on television but when the internet came along that went out the window along with honesty and integrity from far too many of our leaders. We once had Walter Cronkite, Edward R Murrow, David Brinkley, Dan Rather and many more when news was reported honestly and the news rooms didn't have to show a profit. Those great broadcasters help our leaders to a higher standard. We lost that though along with objective news reporting when the corporations entered into the newsroom.

The facts for those that do the research though are irrefutable. Our current administration is shutting down, as fast as it can, our access to what little unbiased news there is left. PBS and NPR are being defunded in Trump's latest bill. CBS is now owned by Larry Ellison a big Trump support, the controlling shareholder of Paramount Global, which owns CBS. Larry is a another billionaire Trump supporter so there goes Stephen Colbert. Elon Musk previously and probably still when it helps him, is a supporter of Trump and undoubtedly helped sway some voters in the last election with all of his posts on "X". It is not possible to have Free Speech when one side is making sure that is is only their version of the news that is heard. FaceBook stopped doing any "fact-checking" and has left it up to "us" yet so many comment posts are missing now when you look at the comments after a post, so someone is still deciding what we see there as well.

The bottom-line is that our Democratic Republic is literally teetering on the edge, and and is pretty much controlled by billionaires that want to control everything, and have little concern for those of us with less than them. They know just as Hitler did that they have to remove our sources of factual information and most of our rights to do that. The First Amendment is just on of the 27 that are under attack along with many of our basic rights laid out in the original Constitution. I pray we can bring this country back from the precipice because I really love this country and the hope it once stood for in this world. We have never been perfect but we have to be better than we are now.

MSM and cable news have lost all credibility due to their constant negativity against the other side of the aisle. I trust none of them and find it nearly impossible to find “Just the News” reporting from any source.
In addition, I believe many people are silent as they’ve seen what happens if they articulate an opposing positions.
This past 4th of July, only 2 houses on my block flew the American flag ????????, and we were one of them. That saddens us.
The days of “respectfully” disagreeing are long past. The theme is we should never talk about religion or politics. Why? Can’t we be respectful of opposing beliefs and views? We’re still humans living together just trying to make a better life.
